Problem with booting
hi there

Bascially my computer cant seem to boot up Vista. When i switch it on, it only shows a black screen with a flashing underscore on the top left hand corner of the screen, and budge no further than that. I've tried rebooting it several times to no avail. This problem has happened before, but rebooting used to do the trick. I am using Acer ASPIRE M5641 series, relatively new, bought less than 2 months ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tq~

Try starting in Safe Mode. On my PC I get to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key during startup. Then try a System Restore to get it back to where it was working OK. I had a similar problem with my PC which lead me to reinstall Vista altogether.

None of the keys seem to work, even when i pressed my thumb on them the moment i switch on the computer. It just dies at the black screen. The white screen with the acer logo on it [which is the first thing I usually see after i boot my computer] does not appear either.

For the future, if it's a software problem, using acronis true image home is worth the investment. With a backup image you could of had the OS up and running in about 20 minutes or so. That's the lesson I'm learning from the above problem.

I see on other threads about the vista boot, no one has an answer. I'm having the same thing and I did like you by taping on f11. Used repair and system restore but I noticed if I left it alone for 5 to 10 minutes it would boot up fine. I have no idea what is going on. I have a compaq presario.Maybe some one will have an answer for the both of us. Sorry I don't have any help.

If it is eventually booting up 5-10 mins later, appears to be a memory issue. If you have more than one chip, remove and leave only one and see if it boots. If so, the MB and or memory are possibly failing.

Yes, try pulling one chip and see if it boots correct.
