Comp Takes A Long Time To Start Shutting Down
Hey guys,

I've got an incredibly annoying issue, and have no idea what is causing it.

All of a sudden a couple of months ago my PC (a Dell XPS 420) suddenly started taking a long time to shut down, what I mean by this is I go to the start menu and the shut down button but I can then be waiting anywhere up to 10 minutes for the actual process to begin, once the shut down process starts its quick as anything.

Ive done disk cleanup, disk defrag, uninstalled any programs im not using, cleaned up all my files, done various virus and spyware scans and such.but as yet nothing has sorted the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

This issue may be happen because a background program running may be causing Windows to hang, thus lengthening the time before it can prepare for shutdown.

We may try starting Windows in diagnostic mode. This will be able to tell us if it is a third party application that is causing the issue.

To do this:

[NOTE: It may be advisable to disconnect from the Internet as any anti virus programs may be disabled. We will re-enable them later. You may print these instructions out if necessary]

1. Click Start and then type 'MSCONFIG' (no quotes) in the Search Box.
2. Double-click on the MSCONFIG program that appears in the search results.
3. On the 'General' tab, select 'Diagnostic Startup' and then click OK.
4. Restart the computer.

After restarting, try to shutdown the computer.

everything shut down quickly, but the problem doesnt seem to happen all the time anyway, most of the time it does, I might try this a coupla more times over the next day or two, see what happens and then get back to you guys.

We definitely need consistent results
Do yes, do keep shutting the system down in diagnostic mode a few times over, and if it is producing consistent, fast shutdown results, then change the system back to normal mode, and see if that continually produces slow shutdown results.

To change the system back to normal mode:

1. Click Start and then type 'MSCONFIG' (no quotes) in the Search Box.
2. Double-click on the MSCONFIG program that appears in the search results.
3. On the 'General' tab, select 'Normal Startup' and then click OK.
4. Restart the computer.
