Question BSOD + explorer.exe problem, please help :(
Hey people, im new here, and im here because my laptop is in serious problem, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Im running a windows vista business on a toshiba satellite m300 laptop.

The problem:
When i startup my computer, it will boot normally, and get to the login screen normally. after i entered my password and the startup programs start loading, after some time my screen will freeze and become fragmented into very small fragment (dont really know how to describe) but basically it freezes. no matter which account i use, the end result is the same.

I tried booting in safe mode and what i get is a BSOD with error code STOP: 0x0000008E from what i read here and there it looks like a hardware problem

But it seems to be too coincidental because the day before my computer turn to this state, i accidentally run an unknown .exe installer, although i cancelled the installation, it seems that a virus went through, but my AVG has already cleared it. i thought its an irreversible effect or something.

Booting from DOS is good, i can go in to DOS and access my hard drive. (although i cant get online or anything, all i can do is backup.) bought a 1TB hard drive to backup my data, copy command works fine but ROBOCOPY and XCOPY sometimes bring me to the same BSOD and that also cause my external hard drive boot sector to be corrupted and i need to reformat it ): it took me one full day to reformat.

today i came with a weird idea to kill explorer.exe during normal startup and to my amazement my computer works fine without explorer.exe! i can go online, IM, etc (though i dont dare to copy files now)

so, i cant continue hanging around without explorer.exe, and if anyone of you have a similar problem or know what is the real problem (i cant figure whats the problem), a help is greatly appreciated.

THANKS (:

Did any system files get removed or changed by removing the virus? They always leave their damage behind, of course.

Have you tried installing an updated display adapter driver? Which do you have?

I did a chkdsk on C: it said there are some errors, restart the computer to start chkdsk /f but apparently i cant restart it and get the chkdsk to work (the windows will crash again), so, system files, i dont really know.

display adapter driver ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 date:7/4/2008 version:8.477.0.0 ill try to update this first and see what happened. UPDATE: it says "your display driver is up to date"

in the other note i forgot to mention during safe mode with cmd, i tried running explorer.exe and it gave me the blue screen after that. now im using my computer as per normal only without explorer.exe, doesnt that mean all my drivers are loaded and theres no problem?

thanks for the fast reply!

VISTA BSOD - explorer.exe 0x0000008e
Hi all,

I'm having the exact same problem ddiikkaa is having. I've been troubleshooting this all day and have not gotten any closer. I think I must have installed something earlier today that I shouldn't have. Now all I can do is go into safemode w/ cmd. If I launch explorer.exe the system gives me the BSOD w/ a 0x0000008e error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Running:
Vista Ultimate SP1
2GB RAM

hey lostalien,

just to let u know, i reformatted and did a clean install XD and since windows 7 beta is still available now, why not give it a try

if not, while waiting for solution from others, u can do what i did.

1. Normal startup
2. Ctrl+Shift+Esc for task manager when windows just open
3. End program -> explorer.exe
4. Then u can use Run -> C: to navigate thru ur folders.
5. The only difference is the desktop and start menu

that will lessen ur handicap at least well, goodluck!
