IPOD problem with Vista
When I connect my IPOD I get the following message:

Do you want to scan and fix IPOD?

I've enclosed a screenshot of the error I get. I click continue without scanning and my IPOD (shuffle) loads into Itunes and I am able to use it as I normally would. Occasionally, I get the scan and fix question when I am using Itunes with the Ipod plugged in and it seems to happen when the Ipod syncs with Itunes.

I have restored the Ipod twice already and that hasn't fixed the problem. If I try to scan and fix the Ipod I get an error that Windows cannot find the device.

It seems as if Windows is detecting the IPOD as a USB drive and wants to format it or something like that. Any ideas on how to get Vista to recognize the IPOD as an IPOD and not a USB Drive that is improperly formatted?

Do not scan the Ipod. The problem is Vista, not the Ipod. Vista detects the Ipod as a storage device, but not as one it truly recognizes. What you can do is disable autoplay in Control Panel / AutoPlay.

More clues....
Thanks. I will try disabling autoplay.

I also occasionally get an Itunes error when I try to load a song onto my Ipod that I am sure is related to the Vista problem:

The ipod "Mark's IPOD" cannot be synched. The required disk cannot be found.

So after disabling autoplay the same problem exists. Seems like Vista is seeing a USB device, assuming it's a USB Drive and then trying to fix it....

Why does Vista see the IPOD as a USB Drive and how can I convince it that it's NOT a USB drive???
