Solved: Vista Crash after Virus scan of Wiaaut.dll
Hello

This is my first post but definitely not my first problem.

I have recently encountered a problem; While my computer is performing a Virus scan, either with Defender or another program, it comes across the Windows System32 file Wiaaut.dll and then crashes. But my other virus scanner crashes on a different file, so I'm guessing that the files have little to do with whats happening

I never had this problem before a few days ago but now it happens every scan. It has happened about five times in the last 2 days (as defender tries scanning the computer every time the scan fails). I some times see that the scan has started so I stop it but other time it takes me by surprise. I decided to stop all scans from starting on my computer but my system can’t stay that way forever.

When it comes across the file the computer won’t respond at all, it completely stops. If I look at the Disc activity light, which is usually going crazy when scanning, suddenly stops when the computer stops.

I have done many registry scans and attempted fixes but nothing seems to help.

If I scan the file individually nothing out of the ordinary happens.

What’s wrong and how can I fix it?

Same Problem
Hello,

I have the same problem. Spent hours and hours with tech (microsoft) support. The problem began as my computer kept freezing up with any program. This is their responce "Performed clean boot and refreshed all the services which resolved the issue".

My scan problem remains, just like yours only with windows side bar gadgets which I have turned off (disabled) has anyone helped you or does anyone have any advise!!!!!!

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike

I had found that my issue was caused by a lock-up of Windows.
My issue went like this:

Windows locked up> had to perform a disruptive shutdown to turn off computer> disruptive shutdown caused damage to HDD
Damage included the file that Defender was trying to scan and many more.

This damage caused repetitive locks ups resulting in more shutdowns...meaning more damage. I guess you could say Windows caused my computer to kill itself.

There were approx 20 damaged clusters in the first 30,000 files scanned by CHKDSK but CHKDSK crashed around 32,000 on every scan. The damage was physical so there was only one fix, replace HDD. Luckily my laptop was under warranty and it was a free fix.
If you are still having problems I suggest you use the Check Disk feature, if you haven’t already.

Best of luck
