Vista laptop won't connect to net
My friend has a new Acer Aspire 5315 Vista laptop. They also have an emachines WIn XP desktop and a Linksys WRT 150n router. I set up a network for them in January and connected the laptop. A few weeks ago the laptop stopped connecting to the internet. I have tried everything to get it to connect, even totally uninstalling the router from both pcs and starting from scratch. The desktop is always (wired)connected (even without the router software) but Linksys software claims there's no connection. They have a cable modem. The Vista laptop sees the signal but will not connect to it. It WILL sometimes connect to a neighbour's weak wireless dlink signal.I have treid to connect with no security, with different securities etc and nothing works. I have followed the installation wizards from the cd to the letter several times also, no joy. Wireless adapter says it has the best driver installed but I'm wondering with SP1 and a new available driver it might work better? Why would it work then stop working? WOuld installing software change that? (ie games for kids)

I never use the software from the CD, I always let Windows manage the wireless, I have had much better wireless function this way.

What you can do is uninstall the linksys software using "Programs and Features" in Vista, it will not remove the drivers, just the software, then windows will manage the connection after a restart of the system, see if it works better this way.

This is what I have found to work.

1. from another computer download drivers from the manufacturers website, put it on a USB key and bring that to the laptop.

2. Uninstall card in device manager.

3. uninstall all software associated with the card.

4. restart the computer. (this is important)

5. Using windows found new hardware wizard reinstall the card and direct the driver search to the usb stick.

Can you successfully connect the laptop by ethernet?

If the wireless adapter is integrated make sure you have the latest driver from Acer's web site.

Then try to connect and please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
