YES .. You need the recovery CD/DVDs

The recovery partition will be no good if the Hard Drive crashes .. or you can't boot to Windows.

Indeed.

I've often wondered just what good a partitioned drive, where the partition serves as backup, would do anyway.

It can come in Handy as an OEM Application recovery ..

But the truth is .. the manufactures don't have to provide the recovery discs ...
and they can charge all those who forget to do this ...
or didn't read the fine print on page 356 addendum 12 of the manual they didn't get

Keep trying for disc 2 .. You may have to wait for the DVD to be recognized.

If that doesn't work contact the manufacturer.
If they try to tell you that you have to pay for it .. Reply and tell them they have two choices ..
1) Send them for free
2) You'll return the computer for one that works .. Then they can refurbish it.

See how fast they'll ask you for the shipping info

Not yet .. I'd wait till I got the recovery DVDs.

It's a good idea to have a second way to recover.
Do you have an external Hard Drive ???
Have you ever heard of imaging a Hard Drive ???

never heard of it but reading as we speak cheers.. its a compaq presario and says intel V//V on the front (think that pentium 4 or sumthing) and i got it literally the week vista came out so its about 3-4 years old but its incredibaly slow hence the reason for wanting to wipe and "start again"

YES .. Nothing tunes up a computer, or fixes any problems it may have, Better than a fresh restore.
Be assertive ... You shouldn't have to pay for the recovery DVD if their computer won't make them.
It may take a couple of Emails .. but HP/Compaq will ask for the shipping info.

Just so we can look up your Computer specs .....
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...349278&lang=en

If you plan on being here at TSG for a while .. you might want to put the computer Make n Model in your profile.
See the computer icon beside my user name.

To answer your original question ... As long as you can boot your computer ...
you can have it recover itself back to the way it came from the factory...
without the recovery DVDs.

But .. If something goes wrong .. You will need the recovery DVDs.
Do you have your Personal Data, Email account settings, Favorites, Cookies ....etc ... backed up to a CD/DVD ???

I just didn't want to be responsible to tell you to do this since you do not have the recovery DVDs.

Have you looked into getting the recovery DVDs yet ???
If you have an external Hard Drive ... Or want to install another HDD ... There is another way.
