Solved: Lost Internet Connection
I have been able to connect to Internet on my desktop HP Pavilion Vista Home Edition. Suddenly, I cannot connect. I can connect to my wireless home network, although even though it says I am connected, the icon on the taskbar says it is an unidentified network. When I view the network map, there is an X over the connection from my wireless network to the Internet. I have one other desktop and two laptops (two laptops are Vista Home Edition, and desktop is XP) and they have no problems. If I assume it is my HP, then what do I do?
Running the diagnostic it suggests I unplug router, etc., and I did that with no luck. Besides, the other computers in the house have no problems. Thanks for any help.

Basic IP Tests

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers> (Note: if empty or same as Default Gateway use: 4.2.2.2)

PING google.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address>
- The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address>
- The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the DNS Server, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Post another IPCONFIG /ALL after you do this

Also, please do the PING's I asked you to do.

Hi, Sorry, I had to relearn how to ping. I used the IPv4 address for the wireless connection to ping but there was no default gateway address. I pinged the DNS server fec0:0:0:ffff::1x1 and it came back could not find host. Here is the other data. And thanks.

Hi again,

What is the model number for your computer? (HP Pavillion is the one having the problems right?) I want to see if reinstalling the drivers for your NIC will help. If you tell me the model I will get you a link.

Also, go to All Programs>Accessories and right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator.."

When the command prompt comes up type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Another thing:

IP Settings in Vista

  1. Right click your Networking icon in your taskbar and select Network and Sharing Center
  2. Click View Status to the right of your connection.
  3. Click Properties button.
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  5. Make sure both "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server automatically" are checked.
  6. Do the same for Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv6)

Lastly, did you run the TCP/IP stack repairs in my last post?

I did follow your instructions about the TCP/IP stacks. when I did the command ipconfig /flushdns I got the following:
"Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
I have a Pavilion m9000T desktop.
Both the IPv4 and IPv6 were set to automatic address.
When I ran a diagnostic, the TCP/IP Loopback test was the only test that failed. TheTCP/IP Network communication network had "Cannot Run" next to it.
I noticed on my laptop that for access it has local and internet, but on the desktop it has local only.
Thanks, again. I really do appreciate it. Ralph

Ok let's try the following:

Click HERE and save the file to a location you will remember. (Right click it and save link/target as if you don't get an option to save it). You might have to save it to a flashdrive to transfer it to the other computer.

On the computer with the malfunctioning internet, hold down the Windows key and press R, and in the text box that comes up type:

devmgmt.msc

Under networking, right click your wireless adapter and select "Uninstall." This will uninstall the driver for your wireless adapter.

Reboot your computer and then run the file I had you download.

I did everything you list below. When I try to run the sp37439.exe file, I get the message "Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been cancelled." I have to sign off for now (early rise in the morning), and I am so grateful that you have worked on this so late tonight. I will be around the next few days. I would appreciate it if you can still stay with it. Thanks so very very much.
Not that there is a logical connection, but the last day of my Norton security program was yesterday (I was going to renew with another anti-virus program). Any possibility my problem is liinked? Please let me know if you are willing to trouble shoot this very vexing problem. Ralph

Ok, the next time you get a chance try this driver instead (save the .zip to a flashdrive to transfer it):

http://download.cnet.com/Foxconn-Wir..._4-162246.html
(Note: click on the link and then click on "Download Now")

You unzip the files to a folder on the computer without internet, and run "setup.exe", which is one of these files.

If the installation does work this time, please run an ipconfig /all and give me the new information after you reboot the computer and connect again to the router

To verify that removing Norton didn't cause this problem please download this program (and transfer it to the computer with the problems):

http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4749
(Click on "The Author's Site" underneath "Downloads" to download the file)

Could you also do the following for me?

Type the following command into the command prompt (the program we've been using) on the computer that doesn't have internet, and give me the information it gives you:

netsh interface ipv6 show interface "Wireless Network Connection"

And I also need you to run the ipconfig /all on a computer that does have access to the internet please, so I can compare the two.

Please also let me know the make and model of your router.

Hi,
I ran the setup.exe as you advised and I got the message Update new software or Uninstall old software, or something equivalent to that. So I chose Update new and then the next message was “Windows needs to install driver software for your Network Controller.”
I had basically two options 1) Locate and install driver software (but that asked me for the disk with the drivers which I did not have. It tried to go online, but of course, it could not connect.
2) option—ask later.
I notice that my network icon has a red X through it saying “You are not connected to any network.”
When I try to find a network connection, it says it cannot find any networks, so that is a new wrinkle. Did I lose my network now as well?
I ran the Norton Removal Tool and now Norton is kaput. I still, obviously, cannot connect. Again, thank you.
In the last step, was the idea to replace the FoxCon etc. with an updated one? If I could get the driver, would the replacement work?
Again, thank you. Is there anything else I can try?
(Just want you to know that I am an educator, and I mainly use my desktop to download programs and stuff to help teachers engage their students in good stuff, so you are also helping a whole lot of kids---I work for the state education department.) Ralph

Hi,
I ran the setup.exe as you advised and I got the message Update new software or Uninstall old software, or something equivalent to that.
I looked at my device manager and next to Network Controller there is a yellow yield-like sign. It says there is no driver selected for this device. To reinstall driver, press on reinstall driver, but I think it needs to go online to get the driver. What now?

Hi again

I actually enjoy problems such as this one so it is more of a selfish thing on my part. Thank you though for the appreciation.

Yes, the idea was to uninstall your network device and reinstalling it using newer drivers because at times these drivers can become corrupted. Seeing as your computer does not like either one of the drivers I have attempted to use for your computer we have another option: allowing your computer to search for the drivers itself by connecting it to the internet.

The best way to do this is to connect your computer using an ethernet patch cable directly to the router so that it can use the internet to search for a better driver for your device. Seeing as you know how to access the device manager and do this I will not provide instructions.

Does this make sense?

If after reinstalling the device you are still experiencing problems we will have ruled out a number of things and can move on from there.
