Solved: Compaq PC, Disk Read Error, can't boot
Compaq sr5710y (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3867474&lang=en).
I used the shrink option with file management to create another partion to install Windows XP (yknow, because vista sucks). but when i installed it on the other partition, it didn't boot after. It just goes to the words dsk read error, press ctrl+alt+delete to reboot. and has a couple colored squares.. No idea how to fix it. I tried removing XP from the other partition, and even booting from an external harddrive with xp. The other partition with vista is still there.. I dont know why it wont boot? also it says f12 for system recovery in the beginning, but it doesnt actually do work

Is this the same computer as the one, Mar 2009 with the power supply issue?

Thanks for the product link.

Which operating system? If Vista, which version? Which service pack? If 7, when did you download it?

Which boot loader did you use for the dual boot?

Have you read this thread? If not, you might find it helpful.

Guide for installing XP / Win2k after Vista is installed
I have not tried to install an OS after Vista is installed. I have created dual boot systems, using "system commander".

I do not know how to tell you to recover from your current situation.

Hopefully the link I provided can assist you.

You may need this program.

Your laptop probably has a SATA HDD.

downloaded windows vista recovery disk on another cmputer, burned it and booted with it in the drive. it loaded and then i clicked the fix windows boot problem, torrented Vista Boot Pro (i think its called?) and it fixed the dual boot problem, and now I have both Vista and XP.

(xp is better)
