Question Problem With Vista and Service Pack 2
HI, Windows Update wanted to update tonight so I let it It was Service Pack 2
I am running Vista Home Basic 32
Anyway after the update it wanted to reboot and then I had a blue screen saying windows could not start and would attempt to fix the problem. It finally fixed it after 2 trys,
I came here and saw what you wrote about no problems , clicked the link to MS and read this:

Removing the prerelease version of SP2
The prerelease version of SP2 is time-limited software. You must remove the prerelease version of the service pack before you install the final version of the service pack. Also, this software will no longer operate after May 1, 2010. You must remove the prerelease version of SP2 before that date.

To remove the prerelease version of SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
Click Start
Collapse this imageExpand this image
, copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:
appwiz.cpl
Click View installed updates.
Click Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465), and then click Uninstall.
Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.
This is what it was trying to install on my computer!! So what do I do now please?
I have Service Pack 1 and also have IE 8 installed
Thank you in advance

The version released through Windows update is not pre-release. It does require SP1 to be installed first.

But if you are having no problems now, just check Programs and Features in the Control Panel >> Show Updates and you should see

Service Pack For Microsoft Windows (KB948465). if SP2 was installed.

Removal methods are described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537/

The only problem I encountered seems to be a feature of service pack updates on Vista -- lost my sound and had to reinstall sound drivers.

Thanks Rollin`Rog: I did check Show Updates because I was going to remove it but it is not there. After it did the update last night it had to do a system restore twice before my computer would even work. My computer is up to date. Service Pack 1 is installed.
Thanks for your help

Sounds like it wasn't fully installed then, But it was the release version of SP2 that you were offered.

You might check for compatibility with installed programs if you decide to give it another shot >>

Also take care you are not overheating or subject to heat issues, as the processor will probably be maxed out through much of the install and overheating could be a concern.

I would suggest turning off the antivirus program, any antispyware programs, and any third-party firewall program before you start the install process of the SP2 upgrade.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I guess that I was one of the fortunate ones. After downloading and saving the full 348 MB SP2 upgrade file, the upgrade process from start to finish took 25 minutes and involved 1 restart. None of the drivers needed a reinstall.

Thanks everyone, Just wanted to let you know I got all the updates for Vista.
Not sure if you know but I`m on dial up so I dpwnloaded "Download Manager" and when a big file started to download I would just stop and start it again when I had time. Worked great for me. Thanks again for your help
