Solved: Windows Explorer keeps hanging in Vista
I'm running Vista with the latest updates and lately Windows Explorer keeps hanging when I do either a copy, cut or paste (using the keyboard shortcuts) or if I right click on a file or folder. I have to constantly kill Windows Explorer and restart it.

Any idea why this is happening? How do I resolve it?

I'd say your first problem in Internet Explorer. See what happens with Firefox. Next, if you have Norton Anti virus or any of their suites, be aware it seems there are some 'interesting' problems between Vista and Norton.

It's Windows Explorer that's hanging NOT Internet Explorer. I don't have any Norton/Symantec product installed.

Oops...my bad. A mis-reading of your post. Have you used any reg cleaners yet? I recommend Registry Mechanic. You have a conflict going on and that's what hangs things up. The registry is a good place to start.

Ccleaner is another free app that does reg cleaning and file cleanup.

But vista does need plenty of ram available. (max 4GB for 32bit (usable 3.5 GB), Recommend 8GB if got 64bit vista .

Yeah using a Registry cleaner such as Ccleaner should not be done unless you seriously know what you are doing. As which has been discussed in other post's on this site, cleaning your registry rarely yields significant results and usually only causes problems. If you still decide to do it make sure and back up what you are doing. I like you have seen a decrease in performance recently and hanging in win explorer which I am associating with updates that are getting your machine ready for the release of service pack 2. I'm assuming but morely hoping that with this release the problems will be fixed. In the meantime I reccomend running a barrage of virus scans, spybot, Avira, and A-squared deep scan to be on the safe side. Also like they stated already use Ccleaner and clear your machine of crap/temp files. Lastly defrag ,, often .. Hope this helps!

yup i have 4 GB installed (32-bit)

i'm familiar with CCleaner, i'll run that and see if it yields anything... thanx everyone

looks like it was SnagIt shell extension causing my issues. I disabled it's context menu component using ShellExView. now i'm right clicking and copy/cut/pasting like usual.
