Recently slowed down
Hey everyone, new to the site, it seems this is my last place to turn to. I've tried everything.

Anyway, about a week ago my computer started freezing on me while I was watching my video's and a couple days that went as far as to freezing while I was playing games. I looked all over the internet, disabled some unwanted services installed an antivirus program (Bitdefender, rated #1 by PC world I guess) and that didn't work so I installed a registry cleaner and that didn't work too well, I got all my windows updates for vista and I just can't seem to get my computer up to par with where I feel it should be. I tried downloading Windows 7 RC but I get stuck at the downloading screen after it asks me for my windows live account information and I can't get past that.

It's really bothering me and I play world of warcraft and I can't raid with my friends now because my computer lags too much and one mistake while healing means a wipe in a lot of places.

So any help would be greatly appreciated, any questions you have that might help you help me I'll be glad to answer and I'm really desperate now, please help me!

hi you could try a system file check http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66...c-command.html to check for errors, you may also try updating you graphics driver, and check in task manager processes tab to see what is hogging the processes

Is there any error messages before pc's freezes up? If not I would try deleting all my temp files & due my monthly maintenance if you haven't done it in a while.

Nope, it doesn't freeze to the point where I have to shut down, it just stops processing for like 10 seconds and then goes again. I can keep typing and everything, but if I'm playing a game, it stops me in my tracks and I usually die... Which sucks. The biggest process is svchost, well, one of them, it contains the service Superfetch, WLANsomething and about 5 others... It's on average right now 80k but it can get up to 100 and I think that's the problem, because when I first got the computer I had 3 svchosts and they were all about 5k each. I'll do the file check and get back to you if there's any change.

Oh, also I deleted all the files I didn't need and did all the maintenance, but it's still slow as heck. It's gotten better tonight, I can actually watch a movie without it totally freezing up but in game it still lags a lot.

I ran that thing in Command prompt but it didn't find any integrity issues. Any other suggestions?

Good 'evening'
Try using the cleaning program called ccleaner. It is a free program that can be downloaded at the following sites:
www.filehippo.com or www.download.com.
If you do use it, before you have it clean the computer disable the regedit, you do NOT want to use any registry cleaner, can cause multiple problems.
This will clean up a lot of junk on your computer.

I think that did it.

But I figured while I'm here I might as well ask another question I've had for a while. My old computer never had connection issues (Running XP) but when I got this new one I always do.

2 Examples.

When playing warcraft, when I log into a character, I sometimes log right back out, I've done everything blizzard has told me to do but I haven't been able to fix the problem. It's like my modem overloads every time I try to log in from all the people standing around me, although sometimes I log in to places where there is no people and it does the same thing.

Example 2:
I play TF2 when I'm bored of WoW and every 10 minutes (Tops) I get a small error that says there's a connection issue and it's going to auto disconnect me in 25 seconds, although I usually am back before 25 seconds is up and I can keep going, no one else seems to have this issue because I die every time that happens. It's really annoying because it prevents me from getting any better at the game!

If you guys have any suggestions/tweak, please let me know, it's been bugging me for a while. Thank you!

It turns out that the ccleaner didn't work out as well as I thought, I'm still lagging a lot. However, I got the idea to take a picture of what Task manager is doing. So I'm throwing this in here and letting you know that this is while no other programs are running on my system. There's a folder open and task manager is open, that's all.

I want to add, those spikes are all just opening folders, no big folders either, just random folders with movies or pictures in them.

Also, I'm watching task manager while playing games and such, and when the computer hangs, task manager says there's a 3% CPU usage but while the games running normally it's a 50%. Also, in game I'm using 2 GB of memory. Any time I enter combat or something in any game is when it freezes, which is the worse possible time to freeze.

On a lagwise note, I'm looking at the network while playing WoW and it's saying I'm utilizing less than .1% of my network connection. I'll try in TF2 later but right now I'm trying to help some friends with stuff. I rarely disconnect in game anyway, that's more in TF2 than WoW.

That's all i got for now, I'll update more as I find information, but I still can't figure out why my computer hangs and is getting so slow.

Hey!

What are the specs of your system?
Are you playing the game without the cd?

My specs are in my profile under the "About me" Section and the games both run without disks, there's no way to even tell the system to run them with disks as far as I know. Actually, TF2 is downloaded so I can't.

Anyway the strange thing is, I think, is that whenever my computer hangs for however long (usually about 5 seconds) the CPU usage goes down to like, 3%, although the physical memory usage stays the same generally.

The reason I posted that picture is because that's my physical memory usage when i'm not running anything but basic programs (services and such) heck, my main virus scan thing is off even. Should the system be using 1/3rd of my RAM simply for basic programs/services?

Also, about the lag issue, I'm looking at my network connection and I'm on wireless, I have a very good connection (full green bars) and I connect at 54 mbps. Is there anything in that information that could be causing the frequent disconnects/lag on the Steam Network?

Since there is no real issue with you system but a lag connectivity time of about ""5 seconds"" when you are gaming. I would try increasing the CPU power from 2.20 ghz to about 2.24 or 3.0 ghz even. Also changing memory from RAM to about 2GB of some DDR2 would be a good improvement.

Also are you using a external network card or is it integrated into your MB???
