Internet is Slow?
I've tried looking all over the internet for a solution to my problem and no dice. So here is my problem:

My internet (In all aspects) has slowed dramatically recently. When I try to play games online (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source, etc.) I have ping ranging from around 300 up to around 1700 depending on the server.

My Xbox 360 connects to Xbox Live through my computer, and when I try to play online on the Xbox, I lag a ton as well.

As for regular Internet browsing, It isn't horrible, but it is quite slower. All of this happened about a week or two ago, and I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the problem is.

Can anyone help with this?

PS: I realize I didn't really give PC specs or a ton of detail, but that is because I don't know what it would be that you guys need. So just ask and I'll do my best to get that info. Thanks!

Try Cleaning outyout Temp folders using Ccleaner Slim.....download it to your desktop and install it and run it. Click on major Geeks link on this page below

http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Also try a speedtest here http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Tell us what the results are

The speed test gave me the following results:

2568 kbps Download
437 kbps Upload

As for that Temp Folder cleaner, That actually seemed to help a lot. The internet runs a bit faster, and I'm getting around 100 Ping on a lot of gaming servers, which is a vast improvement over the 300-400+ that I had before.

It still isn't great, and I still need to speed it up, but that helped a ton, Thanks.

I have AT&T High Speed Internet Pro, Which is listed as the following (I don't know what it is so maybe you can figure it out by what it says):

Downstream Speed: Up to 3.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 512 Kbps
IP Address: 1 Dynamic

Hopefully you can discern what it is from that, I think its 3.0 Mbps but Hopefully you'll know for sure.

As for Anti-Virus programs/ Protection Programs, I have "AVG Free" and "Spybot - Search and Destroy", But I got those after the internet slowed down to see if it was a Virus/Spyware/etc.

I used to have Windows Defender too, but after reading many many many posts of people saying that it was horrible and to disable it, I did.

You speed is 3meg.......but it will be lower mostly..so your speed test is about right.

If you were online with no AV then you most likely got infected

Try an free Online scan such as here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

"HouseCall did not find any potential threats to your computer."

So I guess no virus. Hm.

That's odd. I tried out my games (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike) and now I'm getting ping of 50-90, which is what I used to get. Apparently whatever you suggested before fixed the problem, That was way less complicated than I thought it would be.

Thanks a ton!

No prob....might be a good idea to do a defrag too......do it over night as it can take awhile........the problem may also have been your ISP company......but maybe they fixed it now

Well this sucks, I thought my problem was solved, but evidently it isn't. Recently it has slowed dramatically again. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is the same problem as before, so does anyone know how i should go about fixing this?

I'm sure that it has slowed, because I tried the Speed Test again, and got the following result:

1029 kbps Download speed
121 kbps Upload speed

This is significantly lower than it was before. I also tried the free registry cleaner thing that was suggested before, and no dice this time around. I don't think it was a problem with the ISP, as all of the other computers in my house (Including another with Vista) are running fine.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is the defrag, which I will try tonight... In the mean time, any more suggestions?

Thanks-

If this is going through a Router then hook it up direct and see what the speed is.

If you are running more than one PC through a Router then if someone is downloading or something they will use some of the bandwidth
