Task Manager Won't Start Properly
I am having the same problem as others previously were having in regard to the Task Manager not starting properly, (the green icon benignly sits in the system tray doing nothing and won't open). Also when logging off, the computer hangs so I have to hard reboot. And I sometimes can't start Sharing and Network Center. The previous thread was closed:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...nitialize.html

I didn't see any conclusive resolutions on that thread. Even those who tried a complete re-format + reinstall of Vista had the same problem come back again weeks later.

Any body ever get this sorted out.

thanks

No but I will give it a shot and scan for viruses and post the results. Thanks

I am having problems with other programs locking up too. Like Network and Sharing Center, Winword, etc. so it could be a virus...

Nobody on the other thread discussing this issue mentioned viruses, so I don't know if that means anything or not.

scanned with Kaspersky - no viruses found. Anyone make any sense of my hijack this log?

Thanks.

rmvpa1:

You're using a very old version(1.99.1) of HijackThis that was being used before Vista was developed. That's why your log is showing "Unknown Windows" for the operating system.

Get rid of it, download the current version(2.0.2) from here, then install it in its default location.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Before you post a log with the new version of HijackThis, do the following:

Uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger, then go into the C:\Program Files\Logitech folder and delete the entire Desktop Messenger folder.

Go here to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.38 and here to download SUPERAntiSpyware 4.26.0.1006.

After they're both installed, run their update function and make sure they're up-to-date with the latest definition files.

Run a scan with them both - one at a time of course. Malwarebytes will take 7 - 10 minutes and SUPERAntiSpyware will take 25 - 30 minutes.

After the scans finish, allow them both to select and fix everything they find.

Restart your computer afterwards.

Post a new HijackThis log here.

OK Did as you recommended. I also scanned the computer for viruses with kaspersky and error repair professional (which found various registry entry problems that it fixed). Nothing on the Malewarebytes or Super Anti Spy Ware other than 14 tracking cookies that it cleaned up.

Here is the new log file:

I just tried to start Task Manager, and guess what, it Started!

I don't know what fixed it, but thank you so much for your help. Now lets see if the other problems I was having still recur.

Incidentally, I also changed the sidebar properties and programs - took off anything that accessed the internet like news and money exchange and also told it not to start with windows.

I also had the problem where it wouldn't boot in safe mode - got the blank screen - will see if that is resolved.

Also had fits trying to get online with wireless before, will try that now and see if it works.

While I don't see any virus or spyware, I am not a pro at that but I also see no antivirus present either and that's a no no today. You also could have Guiness status for unnecessary entries in startup which probably are causing your failed shut down.
And you could also have the most toolbars installed which are also totally unnecessary as well and should be uninstalled from Programs and Features in Control Panel.

I would go to "Run,msconfig,ok,startup" and uncheck everything except for :
ANIWZCS2Service if you have a wireless adapter and the bluetooth and Dlink entries as well as Superantispyware... hit apply ok and then reboot and I bet the issues end.

The boot up in safe mode failed - still gets to the blank screen and then nothing.

Wireless connected up fine.

Rich-M - I went into startup ms config and unchecked a bunch of unneccesary crap. Don't know if I should uncheck the video drivers and some of the other entries.

It also said selective startup - not normal startup - what should that be set on? Did something change when I unchecked a bunch of stuff?

What tools are you referring to? Where is that - also in Msconfig ?

Thanks for your help. I will reboot now and see what happens.

the computer did actually shut itself down rather than stick at log off screen and booted up faster and went online wirelessly so progress is being made for sure. Maybe the clutter on startup had a lot to do with it. Its hard to say exactly what was wrong, but the one program that might have helped was error repair professional as it did find and correct a whole bunch of registry errors.

I will get some anti virus software - maybe McAfee? I tried Kaspersky. I want to compare McAfee as I had that before and it worked OK.

Incidentally this laptop MSI GT 627 really kicks butt for gaming etc and was only a few months old. Pretty disappointing tech support though - all they could advise me to do was use the rescue discs I made to reformat the hard drive and reload operating system - yeah right and spend the next 2 days reloading and reconfiguring all my office soft ware and files. Thans to you guys, I am back up and running with only the safe mode issue still lingering as far as I can tell.

Have a good weekend. Should this be checked as resolved now for others who might have similar problems in the future as the other thread ended unresolved?

MacAfee is worthless. You can use free ones from Avg or Avira by Googling them though Kaspersky is better as is Nod32 and Bit Defender.

Yes do so...

"Selective"

Toolbars not tools. Go into Programs and Features in Control panel and uninstall everything that mentions a "toolbar". Ask, Lexmark and any other.
