Unhappy SLOW Laptop
Hi. I bought an HP laptop in 2007 end. This was the 17 inch entertainment laptop DV9000 series. I have 260GB HDD. Initially RAM was 2GB which I upgraded to 4GB.
In the 1st 3 months, the HDD would take time loading up and then one day, it failed. I sent it to HP service centre who repaired the same.
Since the time it has come back, it has been extremely slow. It takes me almost 3-4 minutes from power up to the laptop being ready to use. Navigating between programmes is also slow. My XP workstation which is P2 is 3 times quicker with 1/3rd the memory. Hve been quite frustrated.
In terms of AV, I have norton 360.
I also have O&O defrag (professional) which I used for defragging. It helped a bit but not much.
I also had used Tuneup which improved things a bit but not a lot.
I use CC Cleaner daily to ensure comp remains clean. Hve used the registry cleaner tool in CC as well.
Not sure what the issue is. Vista is 32 bit and thus 4GB is max memory. Have pared down my startup programmes to bare essentials......
Any help will be much appreciated.

I'm going to guess this is Vista, since I have a DV9207US laptop from the same time period and that's what mine came with.

have you tried a memory test? start > all programs > administraitor tools > memory diagnostic tool

when you updated your norton av did you completely remove the trial version?
may want to try to completely remove and reinstall.

ive read to run the removal tool reboot run it again reboot then reinstall.

"Hve used the registry cleaner tool in CC as well."
that speaks for itself.

good luck

If you have used Reg Cleaners then your best bet is to reformat( or use HP Restore Partition which should have a non destructive restore to "day 1", as there is no way back from the damage they do and this time do not install Norton 360. I have never seen any program slow a system down as much as that one and the difference uninstalling it is night and day, but after using a reg cleaner, it won't matter.

Vista also has a memory tester I would use as I can't help but wonder if your ram is compatible. If you type "memory" into the search abr and hit enter, you will get to it as the top entry.

Hi logotherapy123,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

What version of Norton 360 do you currently have installed? If you are using Norton 360 version 1 or 2 and have a valid subscription, you are entitled to a free update to Norton 360 version 3, which is highly recommended. If you do need to update, I can provide you with the instructions to do so after you check your system for infections.

Open Norton 360 and manually run LiveUpdate to ensure that you have the latest program and definition updates applied. If any updates are installed, restart your computer and then manually run LiveUpdate again. Restart again if any more updates are installed. Next, complete a "Comprehensive Scan" with Norton 360 to check for infections which may be causing the problem.

Thank you,
Mike
