High CPU Usage on HP Laptop (explorer.exe using ~45%)
Hello,

This is my first post here, and any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I am running the following configuration:

  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • HP Pavilion dv-4 1211TU Laptop
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 @ 2.0Ghz 2.0Ghz, 2MB Cache
  • 3 GB RAM (I think DDR2)
  • Norton AntiVirus (ver 16.5)...the one that comes with the default installation...some 60-day trial period or something.
  • 320 GB Hard disk

For the last couple of days, I've been running an application called DC++ which allows me to share files with others on my college LAN network. My I have downloaded about 57 GB from others, and my current free space on my solitary drive is around 50GB (52GB of 286GB free).

For the last 2-3 days, the system has been a little sluggish, particularly if I run DC++. When I run DC++, the CPU usage goes up to 100% and the computer becomes very slow.

Right now, I'm not running DC++, but my CPU usage is still hovering around 60%. Windows Task Manager is saying that explorer.exe is using about 40-45%

Is it normal for explorer.exe to use this much CPU? RAM usage is only at around 50%.

Also, a couple of days ago, Norton found a Backdoor.Trojan on a computer on my LAN, but can't delete it because access is denied, obviously. However, that file is not on my computer. Can it still affect my PC's behaviour?

Also, I don't shut down my computer regularly. I hit the power button, which I thought was putting it into hibernate, but it was really just putting it to sleep instead. Does not shutting down the PC regularly make it consume more CPU?

Or have I just taken a ****ty laptop with a ****ty processor which is incapable of handling a few applications?
