Windows 7 Boot Problem
Some basic information:
Running:
Windows 7 Build 7100
Dell Laptop: M1530
2.6 ghz core 2 duo
3gb ram

The Problem:
When booting Windows 7, it gets up to just after I type into my password, then gets stuck right after with the word "Welcome" on screen and the blue circle going round and round.

Leading up to problem:
Windows 7 has been working great, but earlier tonight I decided to test a linux distro (openSUSE). I made a live cd using CDBurnerXP, but before I did that I tried to burn the file to the CD using plain old windows explorer. It didn't work and I really didn't pay it any mind. I proceeded to fool around with openSUSE for a couple hours, then decided to go back to windows. When i tried to boot windows it got stuck on the welcome screen. Thinking it was just a freak glitch I tried it again with the same result. Next I booted it in safe mode and that seemed to work. One of the things I noticed when it booted was that I get a balloon on bottom right telling me that I have a file waiting to be burned (i'm thinking the earlier windows explorer fail). So trying to get it out of the way I inserted a blank cd hoping that would clear it and fix everything, but lo and behold "Windows can't read the disc in drive E:\" followed by "Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using." To my knowledge the disc is fine. The live cd was made from the same brand new pack of cd's and worked fine when it was inserted.

Any advice you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. I leave for the airport in 45 minutes so i do not have time to do a fresh install. Thanks for taking the time to read all that and if you have any questions of me feel free to ask.

I'd say your MBR got corupted and needs to be reset. As Widnows 7 is beta I'm not sure if the standard fixmbr commands work in the Recovery console work or not. Or even is the Windows 7 RC even has a recovery console, I haven't tried it but I will have to after when I'm done with this.

Just a note about burning CDs/DVDs with explorer. I've often noticed that the discs I burn don't play correctly in my Divx player but all play fine in my main PC as well as others.

I think it expires August 1 anyhow, so you might be better off just getting Windows 7 RC.

Smile Boot window stuck on welcome screen
This also happens on windows 7 rc. when u have an improper shutdown (power outage, forced shutdown by holding power button down or reset) it can happen, that windows starts to get stuck on the welcome screen.

Solutions:

When you choose to boot in safe mode, the next restart will work fine until you have an improper shutdown again.

Repair will work as well. but takes much longer then the above solution.

I have not had that issue in the beginning as far as i can remember. But somehow down the road it happend although i did not install any additional software. All my windows 7 platforms are running windows security essentials beta (Morro), Adobe CS4 Master Collection, Magic Disc and Magic Iso, WinRar, Office 2008 Ultimate, Visual Studio 2008, Expression Suite and Skype. It might be in connection with the CS4 update because this is the last changes i did before this happend to occur. But i doubt that and think is rather more a kind of a bug and will solve itself by time. after all this is the ONLY problem i had ever with windows 7, beats vista for sure (which is crap in my view) and even is faster than XP in any competition you put them side to side with the same configuration. And on top of that, it can even handle older programs just fine even xp itself had drouble working on correctly. P.E. with win7 you can play every GTA game (from the first to the last one released) on steam, which doesn't work on xp or vista fully. when you read that something is not supportted don't take it for granted and try it in the compatibility mode. i got software to work lilke macdrive which is not supposed to though, just by changing compatibility and admin rights.

I didn't know it is caused by improper shutdown.
When I think about it now, it totally makes sense.

Thanks, 8Limes
