Solved: Failed Vista SP2 reboot loop
Hi,

After trying to install windows vista SP2 the install failed and tryed to install after reboot. This also failed, system said it was reverting changes and not to turn off machine. It then reboots and repeats the same steps. Been doing that for an hour or so now. I have tried restarting the machine but it just jumps right back into the loop.

I can get to safe mode but not sure how to unload these steps out of the boot routine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm running Vista Home Premium.

Thanks,

Chris

Try doing a system restore from the installation dvd or recovery partition to the entry directly before the install.

If that doesn't work, get to a an elevated command prompt and copy and paste:

rename c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old

If still not working at a command prompt type :
regedit

Then find and delete the following keys:

AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
PendingXmlIdentifier

Tried all options to get back into windows. safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt all go straight back into the update loop. The only option i have at the moment seems to be to restore to factory settings as i cannot seem to get back into windows.

Is there any way to stop it trying to load this service pack install. Maybe something in the boot menu??

Not looking forward to having to rebuild the whole thing

It is FIXED!!! Thank you Microsoft! I have been working with them for several weeks and we finally got a fix!

Check and see if KB933246 is installed on your computer, if it is remove it.

If you don't want to remove it, or if it is not installed, as was my case, inport the following registry key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Publish ers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}]
@="Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-DrivePreparationTool"
"ResourceFileName"=hex(2):25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,4 6,\

2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Publish ers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}\ChannelReferences]

@="Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-DrivePreparationTool/Operational"
"Id"=dword:00000011
"Flags"=dword:00000000

After I imported the key I booted with only the Microsoft services running and ran the KB947821.

I installed both SP2 and IE8!

I sincerely hope this works for the rest of you. We've all been suffering through this long enough.

And once again, thank you Microsoft and in particular satyendra!

how did you get into windows to import the key?

As i have previously stated my machine just goes in an endless loop boot, load windows, tries to load sp2 upgrade before log in screen, craps out, tries to revert, reboots, repeats. Does the same in safe mode but will let it run a few times in case it manages to work itself out.

Managed to get to a command prompt and the deletion of the keys seems to have fixed it. System is still unstable as hell but think it might be Kaspersky 2009 as that was when the problems started that might be the culprit!

Thanks to all the posters for their help and support!

With this errror, you are still able to get to a command prompt through the recovery environment on the vista installation dvd as others have had success. Sorry if that was not clear from my first post. Glad to hear you got it fixed by deleting the registry keys.

Dear underclocked,

I am experiencing the same issue. if I had a bit more of the address in the registry for the AdvancedInstalllersNeedResolving key it would be a great help.

From regedit click edit on the menu bar and then click find to search for them. Your situation could be different. They are supposed to be under HKLM/Components, but could be elsewhere, as I have been told.

You are posting in a Windows Vista/7 forum and the registry editor of choice is regedit. It is no wonder that you are lost, if you have not figured that out by now. Please go to spotmau forum (if one exists) and ask your question there.

Underclocked's solution didn't work
Underclocked's solution sounded like the answer, so I booted from the installation disk, got a command prompt, renamed the pending.xml file, and ran regedit to try to delete the two keys.

When I rebooted, Vista was still in the installation loop and trying to run step 3. The two registry keys I had deleted were back, which maybe tells me that the command prompt didn't have authority to write the changed registry back to my system.

One possibiliity is that if I let step 3 complete it will work now, but that seems unlikely to work.

Any ideas:
- Why renaming the file didn't help?
- How to edit the registry from the installation disk command prompt?
