Solved: IGFXEXT error only after Vista SP2 install
I have a Sony Vaio, running fine for about 8 months, Windows Vista Business pre-installed. I had some driver issues a few weeks back after using Driver Sweeper, but re-installed the drivers and there was no trouble.

Upgraded to Vista SP2, began to get IGFXEXT MODULE HAS STOPPED WORKING AND CLOSED at every start-up. No other errors or symptoms. Worked closely with Sony tech support, did full driver re-install in Safe Mode, full spybot scans, malware scans, virus scans. Nothing of significance. Restore to previous point, error gone. Re-installed all drivers, did scans again, still nothing. No error.

Re-installed Vista SP2 today, now have the IGFXEXT error on start-up as well as CCP stopped working and closed.

It seems like a driver issue, but there is no apparent conflict, nothing detected on HijackThis, Spybot, AdAware, and AVG.

Any thoughts?

What is the exact model of your VAIO or what is the Intel graphics/chipset in your conputer?

HijackThis, Spybot, AdAware, and AVG look for spyware/viruses, not driver issues or anything else.

VGN-Z590 (VAIO)
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P9500 @ 2.53GHz
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS

Also, just got an email back from Sony again, they claim that Sony does NOT recommend SP2, and to stay in SP1. Any thoughts on that?

Ok, then you shouldn't even have the Intel graphics drivers running since you have an NVidia graphcis card. Go to Programs & Features and uninstall the Intel Graphics drivers. Or use MSCONFIG to disable the Intel graphics star tup items.

They they say why they don't recommend SP2?

Thanks.

I asked, they just said that there is no Sony Software on the Support site to help with compatability, and the system will not be compatible with SP2 until then.

How can I tell if the Intel graphics drivers are indeed running?

The error you are getting is from the Intel drivers. Did you go to Programs & Features and see if the Intel Graphics driver is listed there?

Also do the following:

Download HijackThis to your desktop
  • Double click on HijackThis on your Desktop to install it
  • It will install to Program files by default
  • Then click on the HJT shortcut to run it
  • Click on Icon and choose "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
  • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
  • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

There is nothing Intel listed in there other than Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software.

Posting the HijackThis log in a moment. Thanks SO much!

Use Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG to disable these entries:

[IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
[HotKeysCmds] C:\Windows\system32\hkcmd.exe
[Persistence] C:\Windows\system32\igfxpers.exe

Then reboot and see if the error still occurs.

Same error. Waiting for me in the taskbar on startup:

"igfxext Module stopped working and was closed: A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." Option: CLOSE

A few seconds (up to a minute) later:

"CCP has stopped working. A problem cause the program..." Option: Close Program

Oh, wait that laptop does in fact use both an Intel integrated graphics and the NVidia GPU so it should have both drivers installed. Install the latest Intel driver from the link above.

I tried it through Sony's support website's version of the Intel driver, but I will try it with this link. Should I also re-enable the three items I disabled?
