Does it use Winamp for all the sounds?
Uninstall Winamp and try it.

Does anyone else have any ideas? I'd really love to have sound back on my computer.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really suit my case. I don't have a red X over my speaker, and according to my computer, everything is working fine. That solution also presents another problem- bringing my computer back from hibernation doesn't work properly; it just shows a black screen with a pixel-wide green bar at the top. Hibernating, waking up, and hard shutting down the computer to get it back online didn't solve anything, either.

I presume you have checked any external speaker cables, if you have them and that they are still connected OK?
Also, maybe your computer is using some extra memory for some reason? Have you installed any new software that might be causing a problem?
Maybe it's something to do with your BIOS, which might need an upgrade.

I've looked online and found this - "If you have the original install disks which came with the computer or motherboard, reload the drivers for the sound circuitry.

If missing go to manufacturer's site and and look for drivers for this motherboard.

Find out which sound chips are in use either from motherboard manual or Device Manager -- you may then be able to find drivers from chip maker's site."

I am wondering now whether it is Vista related?
