Sound not playing
My computer isn't playing sound properly, though according to dxdiag, there isn't a problem. Additionally, whenever the computer tries to play a sound, the program playing the sound lags significantly; ex. when trying to play a video on YouTube, the video shows a frame, then skips a couple of seconds, shows a frame, etc.

Does this fit with any apparent problems? If so, how do I fix it?

My computer is an HP Pavilion a1700n, and my operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium.

Download and install the latest audio and chipset drivers for your computer model from HP's Support Site.

Maybe you have downloaded the wrong driver. Try these links below. Find Driver - Audio on each of them. The first link is 32 bit for your OS and the one underneath is 64 bit, as you didn't state which one you had.

Both of those drivers provide me the aforementioned error message.

Okay.

Maybe your drivers are up to date already.

You should right click computer and go to device manager and see if any of your devices have yellow or red symbols next to them. Make sure you check the sound section too.

How frequent is this problem? Is it all the time?

Your computer could just be crashing?

Also, check for updates for your browser and check for direct x updates!

Look at the top bar when playing on youtube, does anything come up? Right click and allow it may just be a small update required

Device Manager shows no problems; checking the Realtek Audio Device says that it's working properly.

The problem is constant; no sound ever plays.

My browser, as well as Direct X, are up to date.

My computer is not apparently crashing; I'm not losing functionality with anything BUT sound.

Nothing comes up on YouTube.

Go back into the device manager and find your audio device. Right click on it and select, Uninstall. Reboot the comp. Windows will automatically detect it as a new device and install the driver that is already there. Try the sounds now.

No dice; the computer reinstalls the device, and says it is successful, but it behaves in the same nonfunctional way.

If it matters, my speakers are built into my monitor.

Lets back up.
You have problems with online video.
Do the normal Windows sound work?
Can you play a music cd?

Reading back through the thread, it appears that everything is installed correctly and the comp is doing it's part.
Now, check the system volume. It's possible you accidentally turned it down or muted it.
If system volume check out ok, go to the audio output cable(s) and check them.
Does the monitor have a volume setting? Check it.
If all these things are ok, you need to try different speakers. Any type of speaker that will plug in will work, even the cheapest earbuds you can find if you have to buy something. I think the solution is close, good luck.

I don't think that everything is working right, mechanically; if it was, there would be no reason for the significant lag in YouTube videos, and some programs I've just tried return error messages related to sound. Also, trying to play music in Winamp doesn't work properly either; pressing Play just sets the music time to 0 seconds and pauses it.
