Is my Open Office on Vista causing blue screen crashes?
My wife's Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium ServicePack 1 has been experiencing intermittent annoying blue screen crashes for months. I've been trying to solve it without success, so yesterday I decided to use Dell's restoration feature to roll everything back to it's original factory configuration (after saving data of course). And then add software one at a time until it crashed. I downloaded all the Vista Updates and IE 8.

Everythingworked great all evening for surfing with only Windows and IE loaded (plus AVG antivirus).

This morning I downloaded Open Office, set up file sharing and transferred documents back from my XP desktop, and also set up the printer, which is on my wireless home network. After I printed a test sheet, which printed fine – I got my first blue screen crash. Here is the report:

What should my next step be? Thanks!

Open Office will not be the cause.

How long have you used that particular harddrive?

I think this could either be an underlying virus that has managed to stay on the system after restoring, a harddrive issue or a driver issue.

Laptop one year old
Thanks Danny, I've had the laptop about a year. The trouble began soon after we got it and has gradually become worse. I've always used Avast as the antivirus and it has been protected by it since day one. (Just changed to AVG on the offchance Avast has something to do with it.) As far as drivers go, I updated every driver I could find with no help. Sometimes it seemed like the crash was linked to hibernation, so I put it "on all the time" and it still crashed. It is working better today - only one crash so far today! But I now have nothing on the computer but Vista, IE and Open Office.

Okay so it's done it once today. Go to control panel - admin tools - event viewer and look for the error on the list and see what it says.

This is hard to judge without seeing any specific details. Also have a look at those files that are provided above in the log. See if you can save them beforehand then scan them first. Look for any clues such as the name of an application. Sorry this is abit vague I am no expert.

Plus yes use AVG as it is one of the best ones around!

The crash event log
This event viewer is way over my head, however, I found 9 warning events within two minutes of the crash.
  1. (Warning) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.
  2. (Error) Audit events have been dropped by the transport. The real time backup file was corrupt due to improper shutdown.
  3. (Error) The previous system shutdown at 12:00:13 PM on 8/23/2009 was unexpected.
  4. (Error) Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.
  5. (Error) Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
  6. The BCM42RLY service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified. (The next three errors repeat this same message.)

We have now reached a point far beyond by competence. Can anyone help?

I got through the night fine with no blue screens. However, this morning when I checked Problem History I found this:

Product
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

Problem
Could not load driver software

Date
8/24/2009 7:35 PM

Status
Report Sent

Description
Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 22.

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: PnPDeviceProblemCode
Architecture: x86
Hardware Id: PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_170C&SUBSYS_01F21028&REV_02
Setup class GUID: {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
PnP problem code: 00000016
Driver name: bcm4sbxp.sys
Driver version: 4.60.0.0
Driver date: 11-21-2006
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Extra information about the problem
Bucket ID: 14884962

THE EVENT VIEWER SHOWS THIS:

7:35:54 The BCM42RLY service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

7:35:54 Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected. (Note: My internet connection had no problems, and it is a wireless connection. Is some kind of cable inside the laptop?)

7:35:57 The BCM42RLY service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I didn't see this problem at all, but it concerns me. I looked up problem Code 22. It means the device is disabled and I should enable it. I checked my device manager and it says:

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. This device is working properly.

Under advanced properties:
Property 802.1pQOS Value Disable
Flow control Disable
Speed & Duplex Auto
Wake up capabilities Both

OK. I don't want to enable these with out some advice as I don't know what they do. Can anyone recommend a next step?
