Solved: Access to shared folders in Vista
I created a shareable folder in Vista and this pc is in a windows workgroup on the LAN. When I try to access the folder from one of the other pcs in the workgroup, it asks me for a username and password but the only u/n & pass that it takes are the user login details on the vista machine. I can't believe I have to share my login details with everyone on the LAN in order to give them access to just one of my folders. Can someone help me out here please.

Might be easier if you used the Public folder which is set up for that sort of sharing. Otherwise you have to keep digging into the security settings for the folder you are sharing most likely, but it also sounds like you might have password protected sharing turned on in the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center.

I'm trying to share the Public Folder but the Network and Sharing Center tells me that a password is required and I can't see any alternatives to that nor can I see where I can modify the password to be other than my login.

In the Network and Sharing Center change Password protected sharing to "Off."

If you want to share to only certain users you need to add each of those user accounts and passwords to your machine.
