Problems installing o/s drivers
Hi. My Dell XPS running 32-bit Vista crashed and I reinstalled the o/s from the disks that came with the machine which is maybe 2 years old. Unable to install some of the drivers though, including those which would allow accessing the I/N. First tried installing them from the driver disk that came with the pc, then tried a few from Dell's website (download onto 1 machine then copying to the Dell via usb drive). I paid for a 3 year support agreement with Dell but have had no luck with their support in India. What happens: the driver file(s) take a long time to unzip then return the error code: "Error Code 40 - one or more files cannot be unzipped." For some drivers I get the message "Windows installer cannot be accessed. This can only occur if the Windows Installer is not currently installed." I did some research of the problem on the I/N but didn't find anything that worked. I think one post said I needed to enter an unzip password but I am not prompted for one. I'd be very appreciative of any help I can get. Thanks.

Been busy and had about given up but just saw the alert about this reply. Checked the webpage at the link and was amazed to see this on Dell's own site! And I've spent 4 hours with their support guys and they never mentioned this as an option/solution! Will likely only get to try this on Saturday but a sincere thanks for taking the time to help. I'll let you know soon...

I tried installing the drivers in order but had some initial fails. As I had already installed some and wasn't sure how to delete them before starting anew, I decided to do another clean install of Vista. When this failed a few times I called Dell again. The next guy was more helpful, we ran some diagnostics and found bad spots on the hard drive. They are sending a replacement and I'll let you know how things work out. Might be another week as I work late. Thanks again - you gave good advice & I'll install the drivers in order!
