Solved: need upgrade to premium?
Two yr old pc is vista basic, will not install updates, (I spent hours on phone and email with tech support before I gave up) and in spite of keeping it clean it's very slow. But works.
1 yr old laptop Toshiba is vista premium and much faster.
Should I upgrade the pc to premium? Or are there things I should try before upgrading?

Rather download the Windows 7 beta, backup the most important files (and only the most important) and do a complete format. Watch your pc fly.

That is extremely bad advice at this point. We don't even know the specs of their Vista Basic computer. Those computers are very stripped down hardware wise. Also, I would never recommend someone install a beta OS as their main operating system. That is just putting them at risk. The beta isn't available anymore and neither is the release candidate. So why you are suggesting that I have no idea.

But I would suggest waiting to upgrade to Windows 7 Retail when it is released next month if your hardware supports the system requirements.

Or, maybe we can help you solve your current issues with Vista Basic on that computer.

What are the machine specs?

I worked on a machine afew weeks ago (low end HP Celeron) that had Vista basic and it was a dog. Installed XP and it now is twice as fast as before. RAM is cheap so look at doing some upgrades there.

More than likely the reason the unit has home basic is because it doesnt have the hardware to power home premium properly and will revert back to home basic,
If you give up with the update issue,I would save my user files on external media, then do a factory recovery.
Do you have a recovery partition? most units do in the last few years.

Be sure to post your specs.....a screen shot of disk mgt will also be helpful

total vir 1.45 GB
available 661.14 MB

I would at least fix the update issue
These updates fix holes.......leaving a vulnerable machine.
If you are behind a router though its not so much an issue

Also you do need some more ram
A gig minumum...2 or more to run good

With only 500 mb Ram available, increasing your RAM is the best thing you can do.
