Exclamation Windows
Got a major problem which I have no idea how it came about :S

Tried turning on my laptop yesterday and it starts up as usual but then randomly restarts and loads the 'Windows Error Recovery' window explaining that Windows failed to start and gives me two options:

1. Launch Startup Repair
2. Start Windows Normally

I've tried launching start up repair several times, it does all the normal scans but then says it cannnot repair the computer automatically.I've also tried System Restore, run checks on any memory hardware errors, run a Hardware Diagnostics but no errors or problems are found.

I have no idea what to do, or what the problem may be and just needed some advice and help with this issue.

Cheers...

Check the Event Viewer logs if it has logged any problems.
Run a chkdsk on drive c:, in case there is a hard disk problem.
Run a sfc /scannow to check the system files.
Run a antivirus/antimalware scan in case of infection.

How, it won't boot?

Rocka, have you tried the F8 menu at boot, try last known config, or safe mode

"I've also tried System Restore" did it restore or fail, if it failed what was the message.

The laptop does not boot, it just goes straight to the error screen quoted in the original message. The only way i could do these scans is through 'Command Prompt' but when i do try to load this through the Advanced Boot Option that blue error screen appears for a couple seconds then the laptop restarts. (This is the same with all other Safe Mode Options)

I've tried all the Safe Mode options in Advanced Boot Option (F8 menu at boot) as well as Last known config but still have the same problem, laptop just restarts and im back to sqaure one.

Additionally, the last time i tried System Restore it failed and the message was just that it cannot restore to that particular restore point but if there's any other restore point i should try that. There's 3 different points but all have the same issue.

Was there an error number or code when restore failed?

Try running system restore by booting from the Vista DVD.

If that fails use the bootrec.exe tool in the recovery environment, use the
bootrec /RebuildBcd command to rebuild the bootloader

I've managed to dig out my vista DVD but even after trying to load it automatically by putting it in the drive or manually via command prompt it still doesn't load. Might just have to open the laptop and back the hardrive up on another computer.

While you are pulling data from that drive go to C:\Windows\Minidump
Copy the .dmp files in there and zip them up, attach the zip file in your next post using the "Go Advanced" button, then click the paper clip icon to attach the zip.

Maybe we can figure out what is causing the bsod, just for fun, looks like a clean install is needed.

if you want to do it yourself, lot of reading to do.
