Computer beeps every 30 minutes
I have recently installed the full 64 bit version of Windows 7 on to my home PC. Everything has gone smoothly for the first week or so but yesterday a strange problem started happening. Every 30 minutes(on the dot!) the speaker on my motherboard will give two, short beeps. This has been going on for a day now and is getting very annoying; the problem never happened when I was running on XP and only began with the upgrade to 7.

The only additional software that has been running at the time of the beeps has been IE and avast, both of which I have tried disabling the sound with no results. I have also opened the task manager and checked to see if any processes have spiked in CPU usage at the time of the beeps... didn't get any results here either. Lastly, it happens in a fresh boot of safe mode too.

Any ideas and help is much appreciated!

Edit: I have looked through the event viewer and nothing is being logged during the beeps.

Not sure whats causing it, but you can turn system beep off.

If everything went smoothly for a week or so -- I would test a System Restore point if you have one.

I would also review the motherboard manual if you have or can get one and see if there is any coverage there. Could be heat, voltage, ram ---

Thanks for the responses thus far, I tried the above response that disables the speaker yet I still hear two beeps every 30 minutes. I find this really weird because I can predict exactly when it will beep by looking at the clock. I turned off the computer and cleaned out the fans and heat sink area so I don't think it is heat or dust.

I looked through event logs and couldn't find anything.... the computer is a gateway that I've had for several years now without an issue. I'm not overclocking or putting too much strain on it. Lastly, I don't have access to a motherboard manual as this is a prebuilt computer.

Thanks again for the replies.

EDIT: The computer beeps in the bios also!

hi post your full computer specs include graphics card, ram, powersupply, if you have problems getting the info use everest ultimate and you can use it to gather the info, next download speedfan and check the temps, also try running memetest 86+,you can also use this to test your graphics and psu http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download

Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4
3070MB RAM
400 GB HD
Radeon X1600 Video Card
Windows 7 64-bit Professional

I ran the memtest program and it passed. I tried to run that OCCT and it gave some errors so it won't let me test the GPU or PSU.

Thanks for the reply!

Edit: Reset the bios settings, replaced the cmos battery and still a beep...

I can't reproduce the errors because it seems to be a first time use check. I remember one was about directx 9 not being updated but I dont remember the other. I imagine that this may be due to it not being compatable with windows 7 because I do have the latest directx. The scan psu and video card are now just grayed out.

Any ideas on the actual problem though? I doubt it is the GPU because it seems to be working fine. Also a multimeter to one of the plugs of the PSU is reading 12 volts which I think is normal.

Ok at this point i would agree that this may be a heat issue although Iam not sure what can be done to resolve it other than a fan.you can get temps from the bios,i would have said speedfan but i erred already with occt so not to sure what works on 7 for temps.you might check your bios for power readings some have it

See if you can find the Beep Code data for your model at the Gateway support site.

Might be something like this >>

http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...50890113.shtml

Note that this is probably not yours which may be different.

Thanks for the replies,

I have searched and searched for the manual/beep codes or anything for this motherboard and I haven't anything. Emailed gateway and they pretty much told me to f off because I no longer have a warrenty.

Anyways, I don't think that it is a heat issue. I have had the computer for over 3 years without a heat problem. I also completely cleaned out the fans and heat sink area so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Here is what the bios had to say about computer health, taken after a whole day of use:
CPU - 55 degrees C
System Temp - 40 degrees C
Vccp - 1.39V
5v - 5.14V
Vcc - 3.331V
Cpu Fan 1158 rpm
System Fan - 886rpm

Have you tried reseating just about everything that can be reseated?

Do you still have the option of returning to XP -- your Gateway motherboard may have some incompatibility with Win7, especially if there is no BIOS update for it.

Going from XP to Win7 without going through Vista seems a bit problematic to me.

Am I right in thinking this had to be a "clean install"?

System software can generate system beeps, so it may not be a hardware issue at all.

I had a similar issue on my Dell Vostro 200 when I put Vista on it, certain programs when I clicked on buttons would cause a system beep, I disabled the system beep.

Hello,

It beeps in the bios before the operating system is even loaded. But just to answer the questions, the upgrade was completely clean - I reformatted the HD and installed 7. The motherboard and processor should be compatible with 7. Finally, I have reset the bios but havent had any luck there.

Thank you for the replys.
