oK - i have run belarc adviser
www.belarc.com
on my vista PC with the bluetooth off

searchingthe report
it found
broadcom corp - bluetooth software version 6.2.0.5800

with the bluetooth turned on
under multimedia i get bluetooth handsfree audio
in comms area
bluetooth listed - and in lots of other places

i will look at some other configuration software products - i'm sure theres one that will work
EDIT
http://www.pxserver.com/WinAudit.htm
found a lot of bluetooth devices / software / processes etc - with the device disabled - give this a go

I would expect programs to find your Bluetooth hardware, etaf, even with it turned off because the device is probably still listed in Device Manager. The poster has no such hardware listed.

Mine is not listed in device manager when switched off - on a Sony Machine
See my posts above, i have detailed how it behaves - eben with the bluetooth icon in control panel - it changes behaviour if switched off to on
I have watched it appear and disappear from device manager as i toggle it on/off
also belerac did not find it when turned off (only a software reference) and listed when turned on.
