Thats great I didnt have that driver thanks. However when the box comes up saying installing driver software it spends forever trying to find mass storage controller then asks for the disk that came with my mass storage controller now in device Manager I do have a Yellow exclamation mark next to mass storage controller this was also there just before the reinstall and I have been in device manager before and Im sure it was never yellow. Once again thanks for your help and any further help is geatly appreciated.

Many of these drivers have auto installers and dont need to be run through device manger to install.
Was the media card reader driver an exe file..if so you can just double click it.

Yes the media card reader was a exe. but when double clicked but all it said was:
"a continous RESET state has been entered. choose close to terminate the application."
Dos is open when I get this message.

But Ive read up and the mass storage controller is an intel product something to do with my chipset apparently (its on the link I put up.) the media card reader driver is Phoenix Technologies Ltd so its still going to be a problem even when I get my media card reader working coz obviously at the moment when I put my memory card from my camera in it isnt recoginsing it. The chipset apparently needs updating but the one that my laptop came with is customised and if I change it to the new intel chipset I might find other things dont work either.

Im going to give you all the information to make sure Ive done this right.

Ok heres the information of the mass storage controller:
PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_803B
Quick look on pcidatabase shows that its:
0x27A2
Chip Number:82940GMLChip
Description:Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset
FamilyNotes: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Prod...=2300&lang=eng

Now I can find this on my own laptop in Device Manager under display adapters however the pci\ven dev is
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A2

Also just so you know Im running Vista Home Basic x32 and my current chipset driver is:
7.14.10.1147
the new version should be
7.14.10.1504

also this is my graphics card driver so according to techsupportforum I need to use 945 updates on intels site so I use the link :
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Prod...=2300&lang=eng

Click on windows vista 32* and Im looking for the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows Vista * 32 (exe) I download and run as admin Im presented with the first page of installation it lists what this driver id for an my chipset is listed
Intel 945G Express Chipset
I click next and the installation appears so start then an error box appears
The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer.
Setup will exit

So I go back to Gateways site to have a look and nothing!

The prior link I posted
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&param=1008804

It sucks I know as you have to click on each one and then scroll to see if your is listed...they arent in any certain order either
Click the link and locate the storage controller...then install reboot
next the media reader install and reboot..check for yellow marks and post back

I am getting time outs on their site at the moment so I cant get you the direct link... so I need to hang low for a while.

No you dont need all the drivers
Just get the video driver and the media card reader driver to see if it takes care of your problem..and will go from there...it appears as if your gateway wont take drivers from the hardware mfgs but has to have gateway drivers
