Unhappy Solved: Windows 7 hibernate bug
Hi all! I'm currently running the windows 7 RC on my old pc looking to buy windows 7 when I upgrade in January 2010. I've noticed what I would call several fatal flaws: 1. windows 7 doesn't support hibernation through its shutdown menu 2. the result is I had to set up my power button on the case to hibernate not shut down 3. windows 7 brings the PC out of hibernate sometime within the time frame of 2-4 hours after the fact without being prompted to do so.

Have the above problems been sorted out with the full release or am I going to have to live with a started Vista headache. I pose the question: what was wrong with Windows XP's power management?

On a side note my pc will run a core i7 so full start up times aren't going to be a problem non the less there are times when one needs to put it into Hibernation.

Please only those who have the Windows 7 OS full retail version reply please.

Windows 7 supports hibernation. I use it every day. Update your chipset and/or video drivers.

Red face thanks
I'm not sure if you've looked at my system specs but I'm running a pretty old system so I'm just using windows 7 default supplied drivers for everything mainly because I've got no idea what motherboard I'm using. I know about everything else but I did try installing drivers for an X-fi extreme pci sound card but realized that the box didn't have a vista certified mark on it so I'm bit stand offish about updating drivers. Because that was my newest bit of hardware everything else is around 5 years old. You can see my predicament!

You said Windows 7 doesn't support hibernation. It does. You just don't have the right drivers. If you can't find them or don't want to install them, then you'll need to use an older operating system or buy a newer computer.

Thanks again
it's not that I can't hibernate it's just that it does not stay hibernated. Hibernate in Windows XP which I'm dual-booting with so I don't loose data hibernates just fine so what's the differance!!!! Personally there shouldn't be any! They say that they've "fixed" Vista Ha! They missed something. So they haven't fullfilled there claim that the OS will be compatable with older hardware. Tisk! Tisk!

Motherboard Specs
I found my motherboard type it's an ASUS A7V8X-MX and your right I am going to have to upgrade which I have every intention of doing when I get the money I was just making sure it was my computer not windows 7. It still puzzles me why they can claim that windows 7 works with old PC's when this computer is only 4-5 years old and when and truly planted in the Windows XP era. Which is the main market for Windows 7 users. (so they say anyway)

I've looked on the ASUS website and support for the motherboard ended with XP actually their are only 2-3 of the 5 or 7 drivers for download that support XP and yet with my copy of windows xp of got all of those drivers. Strange.

Talking Humble pie
Alright you were right the problem was a driver I had a d-link wireless network card and had forgotten that the Windows 7 default driver stopped the new device pop-up and let it scan for networks but didn't let it join them.
Went to Microsoft update site found that their was a driver for me and sure enough it hibernated for 3hours & 40minutes thanks! Problem solved.

How do you activate it? Through the start menu or through the power down button? Because with the rc I'm using currently as a medium before I get a new pc and the real thing there isn't a start menu option for hibernate. I can only activate it through changing the function of the power and sleep buttons on the case to hibernate!

Well I have it set to work with both of those. You need to go to the power profiles, just like in vista, and click on advanced, then you select the actions of each button type.

Yeah I didn't/wouldn't/won't touch Vista a with ten foot pole which is why this is a bit of a learning curb for me! I'll try that by the way.

I also found another part of the problem with my pc in the advanced options under sleep sub menu allow wake timers. Automatically enabled hopefully disabling it should fix that problem. No?
