Solved: Vista won't Repair
Just wondering if files on the hard disk can prevent Vista from repairing.

Initial problem was it wouldn't boot - blank screen with mouse even in safe mode.

Putting the vista disk in and trying to reinstall repair or just repair ended in a bsod with error 0xa and IRQL NOT LESS THAN EQUAL

Even after doing chkdsk /r

So I cloned the drive and used the cloned drive to do the same - still no luck.

Formatted the cloned drive and tried a fresh install and it worked - but I would like to use the original os with my data. I even bought a replacement MB thinking it was that

Does this mean that the files on the original drive were not able to be repaired (even tho I could read them via usb on another computer)

Thanks

1. Which Vista? 32 or 64 bit? Which service pack?

2. Please provide more of the BSOD information.

3. With what are you trying to repair Vista? A Vista DVD from Microsoft? An OEM OS DVD? A system restore / recovery disk [ image ] from the manufacturer?

Please provide as many details as possible.

4. Have you the original motherboard in the computer? I don't know if this is true for Vista, but for XP, if one swapped motherboard AND the new motherboard has a different chipset. a BSOD results.

5. Did you try to read each of the thousands of files? It only takes 1, sometimes.

6. Have you run SFC?

1/ 32 bit

2/ This happens when I try to repair it with Vista CD - Click to boot from CD and this happens:
IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
0x0000000A (0x95EC010E, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X888BA8D7)

3/ It seems like a MS CD with the hologram but came from the comp manufacturer. Licensed for distribution only with new PC.

4/ Original MB

5/ Not sure - lots of directories listed

7/ Cant run sfc - cant get into Vista

1. Which Vista? Which SP?
Does the DVD have the same SP as that which is installed on your computer?

7. Please describe the steps you use when trying to repair Vista.

8. Do you reach an option for a command prompt? If so, run sfc /scannow
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termss...le-checker.htm

Report any messages displayed.

9. Have you read this?
http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.php

10. When did the problem begin?

11. Desktop or laptop?
Please provide OEM product page, if available.

12. Have you run any diags? Run mem diag from Vista DVD. Check with OEM for diags. Some OEMs provide diags on an optical disk. Do you know how to make a bootable optical disk from an .iso file?
If not, research the use of isoburner.

Probably not hardware.

13. Would you describe yourself as a beginning, intermediate or advanced computer user?

14. Too early to tell if you can repair Vista. Could be malware. Connect the original or cloned HDD to a working PC. Scan it with an online scanner, such as Kaspersky. You can also scan it using anti malware programs, but I can''t provide more information because that is against TGF policies. You would need to report your thread to a moderator and ask her / him to move your thread to the anti malware forum.

Before you do that, try to repair the OS using SFC and other tools from the DVD's command prompt.

14.b.

If the OS cannot be repaired, all is not lost.

As a precaution, & to give you something to do, begin copying your user data
c:\user\< user name >\favorites, documents, downloads, application data, et al to optical disks or flash drives by connecting the original HDD or the clone to a working computer; or just keep the clone intact.

Hey - thanks for the suggestions

Bingo !

I looked for the stop error and found an interesting fact number 7 from this page

http://geekswhoknow.com/articles/sto...s_or_equal.htm

Quote:
You are trying to install Vista on a computer with more than 3GB of RAM
I have 4 GB RAM - so I removed 2 GB

Was able to use the F8 Repair your computer

Tried command prompt and c:\ sfc /scannow - didn't work

Able to get into System Restore - noticed SP2 was installed one month ago - attempted to restore back to that time - no good - tried a date 2 weeks ago - BINGO

I even went to the expense of buying a new HDD and MB

Anybody want a P6N SLI V2 ?

Cheers
