My son is away at school and has an HP dv6233se notebook computer with a Vista 64-bit OS loaded on it. Since he is a student, he can get an upgrade to Windows 7 for cheap. I looked on the HP support site to see if they had any Win 7 drivers and found none for his computer.

My questions are:
1. Does Win 7 use the Vista drivers?
2. Is this upgrade much like all the other MS upgrades which are headaches, pains-in-the caboose and dismal failures?
3. Do you think he should pass on this upgrade? If you think he should upgrade, what benefit(s) will he get?

Thank you very much for your time and insight. Have a fantastic week!

When I did my install I didnt have to go driver hunting....I had one yellow mark...I went to the dell site downloaded the vista driver that i needed and all is good....As a general rule if it will work on vista it will work on 7
Sort of like Win2000 and Win xp

I would do the 30 dollar upgrade without hesitation.

I had tried an upgrade from vista to beta or rc..went well and ran great

I just got my wife a brand new HP laptop two weeks. They still don't list any drivers for it on HP's website. It came with Vista Home Premium 64bit and I did an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. It worked flawlessly except for the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I had to reinstall that but the drivers worked fine. The install will warn you of any incompatabilities. I don't know if this will be the same for you.

AMD released new CCC drivers for Windows 7 a few days ago. Might want to give the new drivers a try.

Yes Viperfan, the Windows 7 Upgrade will go well, you wont need any drivers. Clean install is always the recommended way but upgrade's usually go well. Windows 7 is amazingly fast and is totally worth the money, and getting it for $30 is really astonishing. Windows 7 is uber epic, totally worth the time and money you put into it (which is very little). Microsoft's first functional operating system people actually want to use in six years. MS finally got one right. Bravo
