cannot access registry, blocked from logs
Hello,
I have had several blue screen crashes over the last 3 or 4 months (I've not noticed anything I can pin down as a cause), after restart everything appeared to be fine. I also have periodic print spooler problems with my HP 1020 laser jet usb printer. When Those happen, I found directions that showed me how to use regedit.exe to delete the printer and then reload the driver. The last time I did that was 3/25/09, and that also was the last time I tried to use regedit). I've had 2 spooler problems since then and I used the Microsoft Fix It, which worked fine. Two weeks ago, however, the Fix It wouldn't stay fixed so I decided to go back the regedit.exe method - that's when I found out I couldn't access regedit. The black window would open and close quickly. I was given the advice to use Start> Run.. type in cmd and use CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER then type in regedit.exe and enter. I did that and got the message "Program too big to fit in memory".

It seems that even though I have Administration rights, something is blocking me. I have read that malware could be the cause of this. I use Avast Pro, SuperAnti Spyware, and Malware Bytes - I have done full scans with all three and they come back clean.

I have not had another bsod in the last few days, but on the last one there was no number or message at the top, I wasn't quick enough to catch the bottom of the screen. I have since told it not to automatically restart.

Things I have tried so far:
System restore: earliest available restore was 10/05/09, it did not change anything so I tried an "undo". The undo wouldn't work, so I restored my latest file from 10/23 a.m.

Memory Diagnostics: results - "no memory errors were detected"

Hard Disk (chkdsk): selected "Automatically fix file system errors: and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". I didn't get any messages of problems.

Device Diagnostics: Other Devices - Printer HP Laser Jet 1020. Result - "Overall Result - Internal Error"; USB test passed. "HP recommends System Test to ensure other hardware components are working properly.: I don't have a data cd, so pressed cancel for cd-rom drive random seek. I use an Alltel usb air card to connect to the internet - it is working fine but the tests were trying to check the internal modem and it isn't connected to a phone line - those were the only error messages.

sfc /scannow:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBL.Log. example: C:/Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log". Notepad opened with "Access Denied". There was also a file called "CBS.persist", Notepad gave me the same "Access Denied" message. I right clicked on the file and in properties selected to allow all permissions for my account, applied and saved. No difference, same "Access Denied" message. I went back in and restored the permissions to their original settings.

Started in Safe Mode. Selected run and then typed regedit (also tried regedit.exe). The black box just opens and closes quickly.

I've read that reinstalling Vista is an option, but from what I gather that should be a last resort. I do have multiple backups of all my data, and original installation disks for my software. It does look like it gets more complicated because of the Anytime Upgrade that I purchased.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this, your help and advice would be much appreciated.

Hello, thank you for replying.

It does the same thing, the black box just blinks on and off quickly.

Hello again,

When I use the elevated command prompt I get the message: You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility.

I tried to follow the instructions to read the log from the sfc /scannow that I ran Saturday but it didn't work - possibly because I'm not typing it correctly. I searched for sfc and then right clicked it when it came up at the top of the list and chose run as Adminstrator enter - black window blinked open and close.

Notepad still won't let me read that log.
I'll be happy to run the scan again, but will that do any good if we can't get to it? The original scan said there were corrupt files it was unable to fix.

Hello, I made some progress. I disabled User Account Controls, and then I was able to access the cbs log. I keep trying to make the text report with the SR's but it always says "the system can't find the path specified" so I know I'm typing it wrong but can't seem to get it right.

I did find some of the corrupted files that couldn't be corrected, thought maybe that would tell you something:
ipfltdrv.sys
regedit.exe
sdshext.dll
SecureKeyBackupCpl.dll
setupcln.dll
W32UIRes.dll
Setup.exe of Microsoft-Windows-Setup-Component
SmiInstaller.dll
UIAutomationCore.dll
vdsbas.dll
wudriver.dll
WMIMigrationPlugin.dll
COLORCNV.dll
authfwcfg.dll
miguiresource.dll of Event Viewer Settings
ipnat.sys

Do these tell us anything?

Hi sorry been busy have you been logged in on a standard account if so try using the hidden admin account http://www.computerperformance.co.uk...r_activate.htm to get your other account set with the permission levels you need or try making the reg changes from that account just remember to turn it back to hidden when finished

FIRST ignore the above post try running a repair on your computer using your install or recovery disc
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial148.html or you may need this method if you have servicepacks installed

Hi,

I will have to download a disc, I just researched and it cannot be done from the Anytime Upgrade disc, and that's all I have. The site MS recommends says it downloads as a torrent file - is that ok?

Hi there,

I ran the repair (it said "start up" repair). It went very quickly but found no errors. I didn't see any other kind of repair - this one looked like it was only for if Windows wouldn't start and I've not been having that problem.

Hello, I tried putting in the recovery disc I burned, it wouldn't load. The instructions say not to boot from the disc. I tried opening the cd drive in computer looking for a setup file, but there isn't one. The only other disc I have is the Anytime Upgrade disc. There is also a note that says an upgrade installation won't work this way.

First I downloaded the file thru uTorrent. Then I downloaded and ran uTorrent. They recommended using imgburn, so I downloaded that and printed and followed the instructions for burning the iso file to disc. I printed out and followed the instructions for the 1st link you gave me. I booted the computer from the disc and followed each step. I got to the screen that said "install now", "What to know before installing Windows" and "Repair your computer". I clicked on Repair your computer. In the System Recovery Options window I clicked on Microsoft Windows Vista (only choice). I clicked on Startup Repair under advanced tools. It scanned and then said no errors were found.

The 2nd link has in bold print not to boot from the disk, and if auto play doesn't load the Vista setup screen to open the dvd drive in Computer and click on set up. It didn't start automatically and there is no setup file on the disk.
