Solved: IE running very slow for 2 days!
Hello:

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a HP laptop. The last two days my internet usage has really bogged down the machine. Doesn't matter whether I use IE or Firefox. Both seem to run very slow. On occassion they will speed up back to normal and I can use the internet without interruption. But if I were to guess it is less than 10% of the time. I ran Malware bytes and removed one item that was flagged as malicious. I run Avast as my active anti-virus software. I did a spybot search and destroy search which turned up nothing.

If I try to open the Google splash page for instance. Sometimes it takes a moment or two to complete the page and sometimes it takes 3 minutes. However sometimes if I open another browser and try to open the same page it will hurry the first browser along. Really weird.

The computer itself seems to run just fine. Excel, Outlook, virus scans all open seamlessly and run quickly. I have defragged the computer this week. No problems there that I can think of.

I would appreciate any advice. I am not much of a computer guy so I am unable to diagnose what the problem is myself. I have 2 other computers in the house and an XBox 360. None of them are having any problem downloading or show any signs of slow down.

Thanks
Tom

Hi and welcome to TSG try running ie without addons http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/04/28/h...thout-add-ons/ and see how it behaves, also you might think about using superanti spyware free version for scanning

I tried running without add ons. Same or worse. Although that is not a scientific compare-o. I am trying to download the superanti... but the only way I can get this computer to download is if I am also transferring files across my network at home. It is like the internet won't work on this computer unless it is also downloading across the network at the same time. It took :20 minutes to download 5% of superanti and then as soon as I started playing videos from my other computer on this one it quickly jumped up to 75%. Probably 3:00 minutes or so to download the other 70%. Now the video I was watching for the last 3 minutes has stopped so I'll start it up again. I'll see how superanti does if I can get it downloaded.

I don't know if this can fix it fully, but it might help.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right-Click on Command Prompt > Click Run as Administrator.
Now type this in:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
And press Enter,
and then type:
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
And press Enter,
then type:
exit
You will get instant results, no reboot is required.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I do run firefox the majority of the time. Both browsers were affected equally.

I had recently changed my power settings to keep the hard drives from shutting down. This morning I reset the power management to the default. The browsers seem to be working better. Maybe the computer was getting too hot being on constantly? I realized that the transformer on the power cord was getting awfully hot after being on all night. Maybe the wireless card was suffering from the heat? Anyway things are running better after an hour of use. If it starts dragging again I will attempt the changes you have mentioned.

Thanks
Tom

Yeah, huge difference between using the last couple of days and now. I think I just had the power settings too aggressive for the computer. My wife mentioned that a couple times when she was up at night she could hear the fan on the computer running pretty loudly. I guess I should have paid more attention.

I don't understand what got so hot. The screen was off and the computer wasn't engaged in any, uh, computing. So I don't know what the problem was. But it is a night and day difference and the only real change was resetting the power settings to the default.

Lesson learned.
