Stuck on Welcome
I didn't download or change any settings... I cannot restart my computer for some reason. Everytime I type my password I immediately freeze on the Welcome screen. I am running Vista home premium.

I have tried some stuff in safe mode. My system restore wont work for some reason and I dont know why... Any thoughts would be appreciated.

try rebooting and as the bar appears that scrolls the little square from left to right press and hold the power button until the pc shuts down, then reboot again this time the system picks up that it has not been shut down properly you can then reboot in safe mode and there is an option to repair click this option and try to repair the system

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried that feature but it says there is no problem with the boot process. I then try "last known good configuration" and I get logged in but my start button wont work and it locks up on the stupidest things.

Viruses [ malware ] will destroy system restore.

Can you access safe mode w/ networking?

Can you log on as "Administrator", which is VERY different from being a member of the Admin group?

Please provide:
1. more information about steps you have tried, so we don't waste your time suggesting them.
2. Brand, model, model # & product information page if your computer is OEM.
3. description of "stupidest things".
4. from control panel, classic view; problems & reports - problems listed
5. from control panel > admin tools > event viewer > information about errors.
6. results of any diagnostic tests you have run; ram / memory, HDD, CPU.
7. Desktop or lappy.

I gota do this quick. It is consistently freezing 5min after boot up. I use the "last good configurations" to boot and it runs normal for almost exactly 5 min.

I have a laptop and the specs are next to my name
safemode didnt work last night so i have been using "last known good configuration" startup

The only thing I really changed was a installed Avast because my McAffee expired
I am confident it has something to do with it crashing after 5 min.

Rainforest, I used that function when I hit f8 during the bootup so I have used the repair startup

Thanks for the help everyone I am pumped that you guys are helping

Hi this is about removing mcafee and has a link to the removal tool
http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml if you can download it and transfer it to your machine and run it this will remove all traces also have you tried to run chkdsk,or sfc /scannow to check for errors

I already uninstalled Mcafee and I try the chkdsk but it closes immediately.

I am currently a student so I am considering the upgrade to Windows 7 but I dont know if it will alleviate the problems I have been having.

Hi you missed my point the removal tool is required to completely remove mcafee, the same with norton, add remove programs does not do it there are lots of left overs scattered around your system, which could be part of your issue

Are you running chkdsk from a command prompt within Vista,or from the adv options?

/r implies / includes /f
http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/l...14(WS.10).aspx

You need to run, only:
chkdsk /r

Yes, backup your data. Consider creating an UBCD, www.ubcd4win.com , which you can use to copy your HDD's files to a flash drive or an external HDD.

Best of success.

Keep us posted.
