Exclamation Laptop dies after desktop loads
I have an Acer Aspire 5920 with Windows Vista.

I thought I had lost my hdd until i found a link on here with my exact problem.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...ows-vista.html

i followed all the advice given on previos post.
Before, when I ran the Dir C: command nothing came up.
i was finaly able to run chkdsk for the c drive and many files were repaired and recovered.

before i was not able to do anything, now I can log in, but after the desktop loads...everything stops. When I click on icons, nothing happens and the harddrive doesn't even run. Even when i try to go to the start menu, nothing. A couple of times, the screen even dimmed as though i had turned the brightness up to max.

i got back to the command propt and tried to restore with

C:\Windows\system32\rstrui.exe /offline C:/windows
after entering this command i am back to the command prompt
X:\windows\system32

everytime i run chkdsk C: /f indexes are deleted and/or recovered

i.e.
deleting index entry diagperf.dll in index $I30 of file 3206
deleting index entry Werfault.exe in index $I30 of file 3206.

recovering orphaned file diagperf.dll (39188) into directory file 38206
recovering orphaned file WerFault.exe (55861) into directory file 38206

I have run chkdsk 3 times and these same problems seem to be there.

If i try to use system restore i am told that no restore points have been created on my system's disk.

I thought my problem originaly was my harddrive...but it seems to work while in command propmt

some have said the motherboard, but again everything works at startup...then just dies...i can still move the mouse, but nothing highlights, windows startup key does nothing, i cannot right click or left click on anything and hdd seems to do nothing as long as i am at the desktop. any suggestions????

also, i do not have any recovery CD's...this laptop did not come with one and Acer says i can purchase a CD from them and that is the only way i can get one

I was able to get to the tskmngr and it shows 22 process and 1% cpu usage and 12% physical memory, when on applications tab...I have windows help and support...not responding. I tried to End task...nothing
tried to create new task and under the open tab...no programs, folders, documets, etc are showing

I'm not real familiar with BIOS. How do I get there and what do I need to look for?

Thanks
