Documents in Shared Folder open as "Read-Only"
I am trying to access files in a shared folder on my Vista PC from my XP laptop, through my wireless home network, but when I go to open a file (e.g., Word Document) it opens as "Read-Only". I noticed the shared folder on the Vista PC has the "read-only" attribute selected on its properties. I've tried unselecting the attribute, but it reverts to "read-only" every time I do this. The folder I'm sharing is the "Documents" folder on the Vista PC. All of the files I want to access from the XP laptop are in this folder and I don't want to bother with moving them to the "Public" folder in Vista.

Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do? That is, access files on the Vista PC from the XP laptop through a wireless home network, and be able to make changes to the documents so they save on the Vista PC?

I have followed several step-by-step guides on file, folder, and printer sharing in Vista, and have changed all the permissions to make sure I'm able to access the shared folder from the XP laptop. I've changed the firewall settings on Norton 360, but that hasn't helped either. I've also installed the LLTD responder hotfix on the XP.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup and the network is set to "Private".

Note: I'm not getting any error messages when accessing the shared folder. The shared printing is working fine without any problems.

Is there something else that I'm missing? Can someone please help?

Hi i'm no expert on this topic by any means, and i hope someone else can come along with a better explanation than i can, but it seems to me that your system (network) is treating the xp laptop as a 'slave' which can access but not alter data on the main pc, i would check to see if there are any settings that might apply to this, or maybe (just a guess) you may have to sign on as administrator on your xp laptop. like i say it's really not my field but hey, you can give it a go for what it's worth. sorry i can't be of much more help to you.

Are you trying to change the attributes from the XP machine or the Vista machine? You need to set the attributes on the machine that the files are on. You also need to have the username that you are using exist on both machines, otherwise you come in as "Guest", with limited rights. You didn't say what version of XP and Vista you are running; that makes a difference for setting privileges.

I'm trying to change the attributes from the Vista machine. I didn't have the same username on both machines, so I set them to match. I'm running 64 bit Vista Home Premium SP2 and XP Home Edition SP3. I just tried accessing the shared folder again, but now it says that the Vista machine is not available and that I do not have permission to use that network resource. Plus, to top it off, my shared printers are nowhere to be found.
