Exclamation Solved: Vista: Windows Defender will not autostart
After the last windows defender update, my WD will not start at PC Startup. I get notification warning that defender is not running and have to manually start it. The settings are set for autostart.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Make sure the Windows Defender and/or MSASCui startup entry has a checkmark.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Make sure the Windows Defender service entry is set on Automatic.

Thank you flavallee, however I did both of those and everything is set correctly. When I boot the pc the windows defender wall has a yellow exclamation on it and is displayed by the clock. When I click it, it says WD is turned off. I have to click it to turn it on each time.

Open its main window and check its settings.

(I keep Windows Defender turned off in my Vista computer and use 2 other anti-malware/anti-spyware programs that do a better job.)

All the settings are to run on start up, it runs but mine keeps giving me the warning that it is turned off every time I start pc. I recently upgraded my avg to 9.0 I wonder if thats causing this?

What are the other programs you use?

I've upgraded to AVG 9.0 in my Vista computer, but I'm unaware if it's having any negative on Windows Defender because I keep it turned off.

I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004.

I've installed AVG 9 on two Vista computers and on both Windows Defender would not auto start either. I wasn't terrible concerned with it being off as AVG and Malwarebytes were on both but it should be stated somewhere that it will do so which it doesn't unless its a flaw in AVG 9.0.

Nikita:

Now you know that your suspicion about AVG 9 and Windows Defender was correct.

Security essentials will also prevent wd from starting
Now with avg on this list..there are probably more to follow.

I am using kaspersky at the moment i disabled wd prior to install so do not not if it would have automatically disabled wd...it did shut down windows firewall though

Thank you all for your replies, I typed wrong in the subject, This may have the same end result though, When I boot up the pc, windows Defender runs as normal, then about 2 min later it shuts off and I have to manually turn it back on, then it stays on for the rest of the day like normal. I went to my moms yesterday because.......her WD kept shutting off...... LOL Well I set her pc up the same as mine with avg....... I thought WD was malfunctioning because of the last WD Update but it all started to mess up when I upgraded my avg to 9.0

However......I never upgraded my moms avg, shes still using the previous version so now Im stummped and still turning on my WD.
