| Sudden Physical Memory Usage Hi there. This is probably a stupid question, or one with a "computers are mysterious things - put up with it or buy a new one" answer. My laptop, with no programs running (and by that I mean only whatever opens up at startup - so no Firefox, iTunes, Thunderbird, Windows Live Messenger, Photoshop, Second Life, etc, etc.) usually shows 0-5% physical memory usage. It's been that way since I bought it a year ago. A few days ago, my laptop suddenly jumped to 30+% at the same state. No programs open, I haven't downloaded anything new, I haven't made any software or hardware changes, but suddenly I'm using 30% of my memory? This is a killer once I start actually opening programs, when memory hogs like iTunes, Photoshop and Second Life bring my memory usage up to a previously-unheard-of 60+%! I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (Service Pack 2) on a Dell Inspiron 1525. Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU @ 1.83GHz 1.83GHz Memory: 4.00 GB I've run both McAfee and Adaware, and apart from a few tracking cookies, neither have found anything. I tried to System Restore to a time before this started happening, and at first that seemed to fix the problem. My physical memory usage would drop down to 0-5% at startup. As soon as I rebooted though, the problem would reappear. Any help would be greatly appreciated! 30 to 40 percent is normal for a machine at idle. However you shouldnt be hitting 60 unless you are really pushing the machine with alot of open apps. It should stick around the 50 percent mark with a few apps open. I seen by your log that you have tons of stuff running that can be turned off,,which will bring back your usage a few percentage points. Your machine is normal with the ram usage..and I do not know why it was showing such low figures of ram useage at a prior time
