Solved: new computer with vista having issues
I just purchased this new computer which is awesome except for the fact that about once a day when I am about to go on(the computer is always on and sleeping if not in use) I am not able to open any windows. I can click on anything and it acts like it will open the window and then nothing. I can't even restart or shut down the system. I am having to do a hard shut down everytime this happens. When I restart the computer everything works fine. What gives? Does anyone know whats going on? Help!!

You might have conflicting applications running in the background.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Unfortunately, HijackThis still doesn't quite support Vista 64-bit. Will it some day? I don't know. So, it's not the best tool right now to diagnose your problem.

I do see you have Norton installed on your computer. Norton is notorious for various conflicting issues. Your computer might be freezing during a definition update or a scheduled scan.

A Clean Boot is often recommended to isolate a possible culprit. In your case, since your issue happens about once a day, it's not the best and easiest solution.

You could try uninstalling Norton, using the Norton Removal Tool and installing a lighter, faster and more effective alternative. Perhaps something free to begin with, simply to rule out Norton as a culprit.

I uninstalled Norton and put avast on instead. As soon as I took Norton off I could tell the difference right away. Everything just loads smoother. I appreciate the help! thanks again!

You know for years I have listened to Norton say each version solved the system drag issues and it is now seamless yet every version I have ever seen was worse than the last one!

Glad I could help!

Norton is only trouble and still people are drawn to it because of its initial reputation many many years ago. Habits are hard to break.

I'm always surprised at the number of advanced users still using Norton. Some claim the 2010 version is a lot better...
