Cool Windows Vista On Sony Vaio PCG9Y2M Recovery

Have been given a laptop by my Grandson to try and repair.
It is a Sony Vaio PCG 9Y2M
Relatively New about 2 plus years or so , am not aware what amount of memory is fitted

The reported fault symptom was computer would not boot up.

Unfortunately the recovery disks have been lost.

Have tried to boot up umpteen times eventually was faced with a start-up repair which there were no options only to agree! Thiswent on and on for ages re-loading files eventually the computer came to a halt with a message:-
Instruction at 0x 7425a50d referenced memory at 0x00000030. The memory could not be read.

Click OK to terminate the programme.

At this stage the whole computer locked up , the pointer froze and the only way to get out was to switch off the computer which I eventually did.

As it is I cannot get the computer to boot agfain and believe that I will require recovery disks of some type? do these have to be SONY or will and Vista Recovery Disks do the job?

I cannot get Windows Vista to appear at all to even get into safe mode to do a CHKDSK /F

Would be most grateful for any inputs as to where I go from here !

Thank You

Smile Windows Vista Vaio PC
Kenny,
Thank you for the most useful information which I am still digesting.

Managed to get into the recovery console and try doing a restore the C drive to factory installation, however it ended up with a message saying that "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, thern the whole PC locked up.

Another try to access the recovery console was semi successful; in that it went through the job of replacing and re-loading files then came to an abrupt halt with a message "
File corrupted or Missing C:\windows\system32\winload.exe - again the PC locked up and only way to get out of it was to switch off the PC

As I see it now the only out of this is to get the original restore media and do a reinstall?

Will be busy thie weekend so will revert on Monday with an update

Best Wishes and Thanks again for your time and knowledge

You could run MemTest 86, www.memtest86.com , from a bootable CD you would need to create.

You could run HDD diags. Sony might have them. Otherwise, pull the HDD, then go to the HDD's web site.

You could create an UBCD [ www.ubcd4win.com ] to harvest any data. Lots of diags on the disk, too.

Have you a product information page? I can't find one at sony.com.

Kenny,
Thank you for the additional suggestions. I am hopeful that towards the latter part of this week I will have secured the recovery disks and will hold on until I get them before trying any of you other useful suggestions.
I am away overseas for a week on Friday so it will be 14 days or so before you will hear further news from me on the problem.
Once again thank you for your technical assistance
Best Wishes
