Solved: IE8: "Internet Explorer can not display the webpage"
For any Web site, IE8 fails with "Internet Explorer can not display the webpage" but clicking "Diagnose Connection Problems" results in "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection."

I can access all the same Web pages through Firefox. My system is fully current with all patches.

I at a loss to explain why IE8 can't find Web pages presented by Firefox.

I am not an expert in HJT. BUT, it looks like there are not a lot of processes running. Have you disabled anything in the system config utility? If so, set it to normal mode, try to access your web sites with IE 8. Post another HJT log.

Which FW are you using? Which computer security programs are you running?

When did the problem begin, immediately after upgrading to IE 8, or at a later point?

Have you uninstalled IE 8 & tried IE 7?

Try accessing the web sites, using IE 8 w/ no add ons.

Boot the computer to safe mode w/ networking & try connecting using IE 8.

Do you connect through a router? If so, does the router have a FW built in?

I had problems in the past and disabled everything not Microsoft in msconfig. I subsequently enabled the Synaptics touchpad software. All addons were disabled in IE8.

Running in safe mode with networking did not help.

I ran Windows firewall and no antivirus. Stopping Windows Firewall did not change anything.

And remember, Firefox worked fine through all of this.

Now the kicker!

Despite being disabled in msconfig, I uninstalled COMODO and life is good! IE8 works again. So I went back to ZoneAlarm and AVG.

Thanks RF123 for your help. If you have any ideas how COMODO came back from the dead to screw up IE8 I'd love to hear your speculation!

Yes, it seems to be common for FWs to hang around, to some extent, even when disabled in the system config utility.
