Solved: Unable to delete vob file - pc very slow
Hello

I hope someone can help with this. I borrowed a dvd from a friend and tried to watch it on my dvd player. It showed as a data disc so I thought I'd be clever and open it on my pc instead and convert it somehow...

Big mistake! The disc has one vob file which I started to copy onto my desktop - it copied half of it then froze so I had to close it down and restart my pc. My pc then took an age to restart and I cannot delete the vob file from my desktop! It is showing as 4 GB but when I try to send it to the recycle bin it shows as 0 bytes and freezes during the recycling!

Starting up and shutting down is now incredibly slow. It takes around 15 minutes until I can click on anything on my desktop.

I have no idea what to do. I tried restoring my pc to an earlier point today (pre nasty vob file) but it was still there when I rebooted. Also, Avast seems to be randomly switching itself off and I am even unable to run Housecall to see if there's anything malicious going on - it tells me I don't have Java (although I did) so I successfully updated to the latest version and it STILL says I don't have it. I can't even scan using the plug-in as it mentioned something about not being able to obtain the info..? Another odd thing is that the little icons that sit next to urls are mismatched. I have the RAC icon for Google for example! All this has happened today.

My OS is Windows Vista.

If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful!!

It is looking suspiciously like a virus. I had tried using different virus scanners and I couldn't get any of them to work - something seems to be blocking them. I have Ad-Aware and Avast installed and running all the time but am not convinced they are working - particularly Avast. I have scanned with both recently - Avast seemed stuck scanning over the same files and the percentage never changed from 0%. I left Ad-Aware scanning for over an hour but it seemed to restart itself as when I came back to it the main screen was showing where normally the results of the scan would appear.

If this info is of any use I had also tried running an .exe file and got the message:
'this is not a valid win32 application'

I also noticed that there is a csrss.exe running in Windows Task Manager. I've googled it and am not sure if it is a virus. Hope you can help!

Anyway. here's the log!

Here is a description of csrss.exe :

The Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem utilizes the process csrss.exe for managing the majority of the graphical instruction sets under the Microsoft Windows operating system. As such Csrss.exe provides the critical functions of the operating system, and its termination can result in the Blue Screen of Death being displayed.

Csrss.exe controls threading and Win32 console window features. Threading is where the application splits itself into multiple simultaneous running tasks. Threads supported by csrss.exe are different from processes in that threads are commonly contained within the process, with various threads sharing resources within the same process. The Win32 console is the plain text window in the Windows API system (programs can use the console without the need for image display).

In mobile devices such as notebooks and laptops, the process csrss.exe is closely dependent on power management schemes implemented by the system as defined under the Control Panel option.

I managed to solve this one. It was not a virus after all but the vob file on the desktop that was causing the problem. I tried booting into safemode and deleting it that way which did not work, I also tried to delete it with the command prompt but it couldn't find the file that way.

In the end I downloaded a program called unlocker which identified that the file was locked as in use by certain programs and after these were unlocked I was able to delete the file.
