Opening files/folders
Hello, I have an HP Laptop, just purchased one year ago, and am running Vista Home Basic. I reset my wireless router today, therefore I had to run the Belkin software on my computer. I don't know if this caused my problem, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Anyway, my internet is running well (obviously) however, my wireless icon says I am not connected to any wireless network. Also, double clicking will not allow me to open anything on my desktop. For internet, and single pictures that are on the desktop, I can bypass that by just right clicking and choosing "Open". However, when I try to open any folders, even my documents folder, a box comes up with a red X saying that the path is invalid.
My 6 month old son did hit some keys today at one point, but I don't know of any key combination that would do this. I run AVG, SpyBot S&D, and Adaware for antivirus programs.
Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
-Jacqueline

Thank you for your response, but I've tried looking to see if something was wrong with the configuration of my mouse. No luck.

When I go to Start<Control Panel<Mouse, a box pops up with a red X that says:

"Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver please uninstall the Synaptics Driver by clicking on the Yes button. You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for your external device again.
Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now?"

When I go to the start menu, and try to click on 'Computer', a box with a red X pops up that says "Invalid handle"

When I try to open folders on my desktop, a box with a red X pops up and says "The handle is invalid"

I didn't install any new software, except for uninstalling and reinstalling my wireless router. Other than that, I have a card reader for my camera that I plug into one of the usb ports so I can get pictures off of my camera, but that's it.

try this

go to start. type.device manager (click continue)

click the little + sign next to mice and other pointing devices.

see if theres any yellow or red marks next to (your dell mouse should be where my microsoft mouse is)

if there is. right click dell mouse. choose update driver. see if that helps.

does your mousepad work when clicking on a desktop icon ?
did you get a disc with your mouse ? what is the name & model# of mouse ?
after you get the "unable to connect to device driver" error. do you get a little dell mouse control panel ?

i get same error. choose no. then a microsoft mouse control panel pops up.

if nothing else works try (in device manager) right click on dell mouse. choose uninstall. reboot & let windows reinstall. (if you dont have a disc)
