audio problem...
the volume icon disappeared from my systray. i knew i had the fix somewhere, but to save time [!?!] i went into control panel/sounds, etc. and disabled the speakers there, as i didnt want to hear sounds in what i was doing. afterwards, i fixed the icon problem, however, i cannot reactivate the speakers as when i set my pointer on the volume icon, it says 'no audio output device is installed', which makes no sense as i see: device manager>sound, video and game controllers>conexant high definition smartaudio 221... what is wrong--am i mentally challenged today?? did i get ahead of myself, or what?? how do i get 'sound' to recognize what device mgr. knows is there??

thank you for your blessed knowledge!!

Create a system restore point.

In Dev Mgr, uninstall the Conexant HD SA 221 . . ..
Shut down.
Re-start.
If Vista doesn't recognize your audio, install the software manually.

NOTE: above is generic information. Check w/ your PC manufacturer or the conexant tech support.

For XFX driver problems, special steps need to be followed. The same may be true for your issue.

Dev Mgr is merely a GUI for some registry entries. Dev Mgr does not necessarily reflect real life.

In Win 98, for example, one could install drivers for a non existent dial up modem, & Dev Mgr would report that the device was working properly.
