Blue Screen Crash
HI,

Downloaded iTunes yesterday due to not being able to get an app to appear on my iPod touch. Since then been getting blue screen crashes with the message C:\windows\asscrprolog.exe to begin with. Crash re- occurs before I can actually do anything (i.e. uninstall iTunes).

Cannot any longer re-boot in safe mode either. Symptoms appear to be getting steadily worse, in perpetual crash re-boot cycle now.....

help!!

Which Vista? Which SP? 32 or 64 bit?

Please provide more of the BSOD information.

Please provide a product information page for your computer.

Do you have a Vista OS DVD?

Is your data backed up?

Do you know how to make a bootable disk from an .ISO file?

What repair, if any, maneuvers have you attempted?

could indicate that the files on your hard disk drive are becoming corrupt or your HDD has become damaged, particularly if you have had to turn off your computer.

Then, try to reach option 2. If successful, reboot or shut down the PC. If you can not reach option 2's screen, it might be a long day.

Is your data backed up? If not, do you have a flash drive? Do you know how to create a bootable optical disk from an .ISO file?

Hi,

Some of my data is backed up, mostly mp3's etc. Anything saved to the c drive isn't, but isn't particularly important either.

I think I am in complete disaster recovery phase now, but can't find the original Vista recovery disk - can I download another version onto my back up drive? I don't think the works laptop I'm currently using can write to disk......

I can access the Set Up pages so can change the boot preferences to external HDD for this purpose.

No. Does your lappy have a recovery partition?

Answer my questions in #2, above, please.

Have you a flash drive or an external hard disk drive [ HDD ]? Using UBCD, you could copy your files to such a device.

You might need to contact the lappy manufacturer for a new set of disks.

OK, found the ASUStek recovery disk and booted that - still get a blue screen crash with the message Ntfs.sys. That happens even when i go to boot in safe mode. booting from the hard drive still gives me the old crash cycle.

System data I can find easily find is:

32 bit

Not sure which Vista version, other than Home

Don't know what BSOD means - Sorry!

Don't know how to provide a product info page either - useless aren't I?

Blue Screen of Death

Look on the computer for a sticker about the size of a mailing label. In teeny tiny print you will see something similar to Vista Home Premium or Vista Home Basic

For how long have you owned the computer?

More information about ntfs.sys would be helpful.

Example: Do you see "Stop" followed by 4 or 5 sets of characters?

Also look on the lappy, probably on the bottom, for a sticker with information about the model & model #

Why not start with posting a hijackthis log as this could easily be spyware especially since it started with Itunes install.

You didn't really reply to Rainforest's suggestions about running chkdsk from the command prompt (post 3)

The NTFS error is telling you that there is file corruption on the disk. Must be pretty serious if it is preventing you from starting.

Is there a built-in "recovery environment" available from the F8 boot menu?

You will see this as the "repair my computer" option. IF that is there select it.

Select the "command prompt" option and run:

chkdsk /r

And if you cannot reboot after that, try both Startup Repair and System Restore available from the repair/recovery environment as well.

I don't know why you would receive a BSOD if you boot to the Toshiba disk because the BSOD comes from Windows, not your hardware. Booting to the Toshiba disk does not permit your computer to boot into Windows. Does not permit your computer to even get close to booting to Windows.

You will need to set your computer's boot order to boot to the optical drive before booting to the hard disk drive. This is done in the computer's BIOS.

HOWEVER, within seconds of turning on your computer, there is probably a notice that tells you to press a key, such as F10 to access the boot order. I don't know the verbage Toshiba uses.

With the Toshiba recovery disk in your optical drive:
Press it. Highlight / select your optical drive. Press enter.

If you run Toshiba's recovery form an optical disk or from their recovery partition, you might lose your data. Try chkdsk /r from the command prompt in option 2, firstly.
