DVD Drive not opening or reading
So I've had this computer for a little over a year and the DVD drive has always worked fine. Now it refuses to open while my computer is running. It will only open right when I turn on my computer (which means it is recognizing the drive). When I put a disc in the drive when I can get it open, it will still not read the disc. I've checked under the Properties of the drive in My Computer and is says "this drive is working properly". I've read a few other threads on similar subjects and tried the solutions but they have not worked and I have not been able to find anyone who's drive opened at startup, but not after.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm using an HP Pavilion dv9000 running on Vista (64)

Try deleting the drive in Device and rebooting to reinstall.
It's not unusual for these drives to fail, and they are cheap and easy to replace.

I tried rebooting and restalling, and I also tried updated the driver. The problems do not occur until Vista opens (at bootup) so it has something to do with the OS. Any ideas??

The laser has probably failed.
