looks like a harddrive problem - Do you have a recovery or windows CD

do you have another machine you can create a CD on
www.ubuntu.com
download the ISO right click and burn to CD to crreate a bootable CD
put that CD in the broken machine and see if it boots

then you may be able to copy data off onto a USB device

My next move would be a low level format using the harddrive manufacturers utility
but you will lose all data and OS

Update:

I am currently having a diagnostic test ran by a computer tech person at Staples and will post the results for other forum users. However, last night I googled vista and itunes and apparently there has been some issues. I thank you guys for helping me trouble shoot. I will definitely pass this site on to my colleagues and students. Have a great day.

whereabouts is that staples ?
Just interested because I have recommended staples to quite a few friends and family for some quite good deals on machines
In fact we have probably purchased 5 laptops and two desktops from them in South East UK
