Unable to Boot Windows Vista
I attempted to install the upgrade to my itunes software when my computer froze. I used CTRL, ALT, and DEL to shut down the program but nothing happened. I tried shutting down from the start button and still nothing happened. I ended up having to take the battery out to shut my computer off. I have attempted to reboot in 'safe mode' via F8 without success. However, my screensaver is still functioning. Other trials include:

1. Start up repair - tells me I have no problems.

2. System restore - will not restore windows from an earlier point and time.

3. Windows memory diagnostic tool - no memory hardware errors noted.

4. Command prompt - open a command prompt window. brings up dos and it states the drive is X:\windows\system32>

I tried the following command prompt:

C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe /offline C:/Windows

and:

chkdsk C: /f

The computer ran a series of test ending with "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

This is the same computer with the "missing file." I am unable to get to the "start button" to fix anything. My computer is a Gateway, Model: M6750. I left it on overnite try to reboot to the last successful boot . . . without success.

I had tried the following command prompt:

C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe /offline C:/Windows

and:

chkdsk C: /f

but not:

chkdsk /r

now that screen runs through a list of files but does not give me a prompt to try

chkdsk /r

Tried it again . . . turned my computer off and rebooted using F8

Choose the "command prompt"

and typed in chkdsk /r

It tells me the type of file system is NTFS
Cannot lock current drive.

Then it pops up:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. wold you like to schedule . . . and I chose "yes"

Then it tells me "this volume will be checked the next time the system restarts."

and returns to

X:\windows\system32>
