Hi Teck Support Guy,

I have a Toshiba with Windows Vista and I do not have any sound.
What do I need to do to reinstall my sound?

Hi Lisa6447,

Sorry but I do not find "sound video and game controllers" when I open my device manager. I do not follow how to get to my computer homepage to download audio drivers.
Can you simplify this process, please?
Thanks

golf42:
Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Would you describe yourself as a beginning, intermediate or advanced computer user?

Do you have any sounds? Windows sounds when the computer starts up? Music from a CD or audio from a DVD?

Control panel > classic view > "sounds & audio devices".
"sounds" tab
In the lower 3rd, look for "program events"
Look for 1 that has a speaker to the left.
left click said entry.
Now, below the area with the white back ground, look for a button with ">". Left click it.
What do you hear?

Are your speakers muted?

Have you ever had sound? If so, when did you lose sound? Can you associate onset of the problem with the installation, removal or upgrading of a program?

Which Toshiba? Go to www.toshiba.com
On the left, select your product from the drop down menu [ look for a down pointing arrow ].

Which Vista flavor, # of bits and service pack?
RIGHT click "computer"
Left click "properties"

To access device manager:
RIGHT click "computer"
Left click "manage"
maximize screen
On the left, left click "device manager"
On the right, look for sound, video & game controllers.
If a "+" sign, left click it, to change to "-"
What are the entries?

You might want to provide us with a screen shot.
screenshot

On your keyboard, look for a key labeled "print screen" OR "PrtSc" OR "PRN SCN" or some variation.
When you want to capture that which is displayed, press the print screen button.
Open Paint [ start > programs / all programs > accessories > paint [ rarely MS Paint]
Maximize Paint
left click "edit"
Left click "paste"
file > save as.
Save the file to any location of your choice.
File name: your choice, for example: "filename"
save as type: left click down pointing arrow. Left click jpg / jpeg
Left click "save" / "ok".

The file name has now been saved as filename.jpg [ or filename.jpeg ].

Return to the thread.
Left click "go advanced".

Left click "manage attachments"
left click "browse"
browse to the location, on your computer, where you saved "filename.jpg"
Left click filename.jpg
left click "open"
left click Upload"
close window of upload screen after the file has been uploaded.

enter text into the reply area.
left click "submit"

Send us a screen shot of device manager.

In control panel, be sure to left click on "classic view", which is in the upper left corner.

Look for "sounds"

Hi Golf42 - has your problem been resolved yet ? You've had a lot of great advice so far and I'm almost afraid to ask a couple of really obvious questions ! I've got a Toshiba laptop and "lost" my sound one time also - till I discovered that the volume control on the side had somehow been turned down to it's lowest, probably when I was pulling it in and out of its case... If you have a desktop, did you lose the sound after installing Vista Service Pack 1 ? If so, installing SP2 might well fix the problem - it did for me !
